Did the Autism ride out of O Ridge today on the tandem with my son Evan. Great day though they put us on Tufton which is beautiful of course but now a freeway of sorts. Climbing Longnecker, Cuba etc. quite a workout with the weight but Evan was great at giving power when I asked. He had a great time, some swag, etc. Next Saturday we're doing the Six Pillars half century, Eagleman course.

I did the team training session in Columbia at Columbia Gateway Drive:

Interactive (Google) Map

I started getting hot after the session--I wasn't fresh during the session--from the ride down though the ride was not bad at all. I started getting a cramp on the way home.

Would taking frederick rd to old columbia pike to montgomery to 108 been a little better? sure you'd have to climb out of ellicot city coming home but a little safer than rt 1.
One way or another everyone in my house got to ride today, this after noon the boy did 1.5 miles @ eastern reginal while I pulled sis in a car, then after school mommy mountain biked @ rockburn while I and the boy hiked carrying sis in the backpack. So right now I have 2 pooped tired kids up for the night.

HEy Folks: I got to build a french drain at my parents house, would have preferred to ride a french bicycle.
Josh and Harry: great taking out the kids. Only 1 of my 3 ride these days and she's away at college
I plan to ride tomorrow. I'm thinking of southern MD. Looking at bikely for a cue sheet. I hope to ride 60-80 easy miles. I want to leave as early as possible, 8ish would be nice. Anyone interested post or call my home 410###744###9276. I'll follow the messages tonight. If anyone know a nice long route please post it. Thanks
Josh your ride is too early and too short.

You brave brave soul, Rt 1 and Rt 175, The wife would kill me if I rode those (or the drivers doing 70 plus would).

So, I turned around and rode it the other direction, but this time with VZ Navigator turned on so that I wouldn't miss my exit again.
I'd use Rt 175 (and Rt 1) again.
The first time that I used Rt 1 was riding with Barry to Elkridge for my very first DC RAND century. Somehow we got split up by the end of the ride. I rode home alone with sketchy lighting. (well, what I would consider sketchy compared to what I have now) That ride was the first time that I rode through the city at night--through the city and then through Dundalk. It would be the first time I decided not to ride past the I-95 interchange on Eastern Ave. I turned off of Eastern on to Dundalk, instead, picking up Holabird. Now that I'm smarter, I should have picked up Boston leading to German Hill.

We were there as well. My husband had our son on the tandem too - not sure how he made it up Longnecker on a heavy tandem and 7 1/2 year old kid. We saw some other tandems but no other kids on the 25 miler - we got a late start though - didn't start until about 8. Agree, didn't like Tufton etc either but I thought this ride was much less hilly than last years course.

NR-What kind of drills did you do? I gotta get out for some intervals.

We practiced bridging up to a breakaway teammate, but doing so in a manner that we wouldn't drag the rest of the pack with us. Also, there was some practice attacking decisively and we did some hi-speed cornering.

My trip report: excellent area for riding few cars, gentle rolling hills, beautiful scenery and a lot of Harleys(hate the noise). I started out at 8 from Southern HS. Left my pump on my car and didn't realize until mile 4. I was seeing a few cyclist so figured not to worry. Then I didn't see any until Deale 40+ miles later. At mile 15 I lost a spoke on the rear so adjusted the other spokes to compensate. It's a 36 spoke wheel so I wasn't worried. Wanted to tape it to another spoke BUT my duct tape was on my pump...back at the car(strike 2). So decided to use a zip tie. Went into my bag and remembered that I gave my last 3 to a stranded cyclist on the Gwynn Falls trail. Strike 3!! I decided to ride anyway. No problems with the wheel.
My legs felt strong all day. I ended up riding 75 miles because a bridge(Lower Marlboro rd) was out. Rode all the way down to the bridge and thought I could sneak across the detour...wrong so I had to ride back up the road. I spoke to a local and she said not to miss the little settlement of Lower Marlboro on the other side of the bridge. So I went out of way and looped around to see the little village(thus an extra 15 miles). Some pretty cool, really old homes along the water. I then headed over to Chesapeake Beach(touristy and crowded), up to North Beach which was much nicer and ate a good Gelato on the bay. This area had the most harleys per square ft. in MD. I think they like it because the roads hear hilly and curvy...a lot of fun to bike as well. One motorcycle almost hit me because he was taking a tight downhill curve to tight and in my lane. Both of our eyes were HUGE when we shot past each other. Another problem I faced was the cue sheet was screwed up. I think there was some new development in this area so roads were changed. I just hugged the water up through Deale(another quaint water community) then back to the high school.
miles: at least 75
speed: pretty fast(for me) I didn't take many long breaks except to mess with my wheel. I started riding some time after 8:30 and finished by 2:30.
weather: beautiful but did get a little toasty near the end of the ride. This was really noticed as I rode away from the bay.
High points:
Lower Marlborro rd, town and water views(didn't much care for the bridge being out)
Dalrymple rd rollers
views of the bay eating my gelato
Fairhaven rd and the small community associated with it. Great higher views of the bay
The Lama ranch on Sudley rd
The scent of wisteria for much of the ride, like the scent of hundred naked virgins
The fact my wheel survived...now I gotta rebuild it for Mondays commute. Might just zip tie it for now.
