Finally got a chance to take out the new bike on a trail! Coming from my $800 hardtail with the shot fork...and going to the Yeti AS-R...all I can say is it floats. Just floated over rocks like they weren't there (the small ones at least). And my legs didn't get nearly as fatigued as fast since they had 100m less suspension they had to act as. No pictures, sadly, and they'd look pitiful after some of the ones I've been looking at in this thread anyway, but it was a rush anyway. Debating whether to flip the stem...my handlebars are a little higher than on my hardtail, and I felt super confident on the descent, but my front wheel was all over the place on some parts of the ascent. So I know that they say it's the rider, not the bike, and having a nice bike certainly doesn't make me a good rider, but it is confidence inspiring...not to mention makes riding more fun!

Rode about 13 miles today on a demo ride. Rode 2 miles on a Gary Fisher Paragon 29er. Juciy Discs. Much nicer then my Trek 4500 SS. Brought the Paragon back and got got on a Gary Fisher Hi-Fi. That is such a nice bike. So so fast and smooth. All the bumps I normally feel on my Trek were gone and it was also kinda nice riding with gears. To bad I dont have the $6200 it'd take to bring it home.

I had yesterday off and when the sun came out I rushed out to bike. There's a net of trails, both for humans and horses, starting about 2 minutes away from my home. I had a lot of fun. To begin with I was mostly ascending and the ground was ridiculously loose, a few times I was forced to finish the climb on foot. However it was good to know that when I'd turn back it'd be almost all downhill. ;)

There's lots of different routes to try out there, I have tomorrow off as well so I might go back out if the sun will stick around.

Virgin Ride

Today I took my brand new (and first) mountain bike out. Unfortunately, it has rained here every night for a couple of weeks, so the trails are too muddy. We just went out on a paved path. My boyfriend and I took my three kids. It was also the first time I've taken my kids on a real ride. My daughter is only four and still using training wheels. She doesn't have much endurance. She didn't make it far, but I'd thought of that and brought a rope. We tethered her to my boyfriend's bike and he pulled her. We all had a great time. It was a perfect way to break in a new bike!!!

took my dad out to the local trail today.

Today was slow speed trialsy playtime. This direction on these was easy; much tougher the other direction. Once up the first, you've got no momentum to hit up the second - hopping and lurching time, folks.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5836.jpg
Up and down a bunch of various sized and sloped rollers and rocks, working on the hopping thing. A nice bonus is it really opens my eyes to other features to hit on the bigger bikes.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5907.jpg
Found a *perfect* natural ramp for a ~ 5' stepdown drop to a mellow tranny - with a smallish gap over some other rocks you need to clear. Just to the left of the shot above, so you have the small option in the pic, and the much bigger option on the other side. Perfectly lined to toss you right back onto the trail. All rock - no making lines off trail.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5808.jpg
A small roller, but a steep and fun one. Very tempting to launch the top with the big bike someday, but it would send you to a very flaaaaaaat landing. Not gonna do it.

scrublover 06-18-08 02:40 PM

Today at playtime:

Nice and smooth LZ on this one. Working up to one a little bigger than this in there, that has a bit of a gap that sketches me out.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5979.jpg

IMO, this would have made a better drop from the rock up top, but then I didn't build the trail. Or maybe a skinnier skinny instead.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5970.jpg

A side line - up the backside, then down the nose of the rock - right back onto the main trail.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_5992.jpg

Lotsa more good stuff in this area. It'll take some more exploring for me to figure out all the various loops and connections.

Blue Mtn. over in Peekskill today.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_6088.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_6048.jpg
Fire road up to Yin-->Bailey's-->Yang-->2 Live Crew-->Chewbacca-->Upper SIS-->Lower SIS-->upper Stinger-->My Favorite Trail-->lower Stinger-->Debacle-->Blue Mtn. summit-->Myx Monster--> (then over into Depew Park) El Capitan-->Dr. Jeckyl-->entirely beat, back to the car via the access road. That leaves out a bunch of fire road and two track connections between some of the trails.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_6095.jpg
This ride fueled by leftover blueberry and raspberry pancakes from this morning.

Near five hours on the bike. Nice and tired before going to work tonight. Excellent!

I finally got to ride some single track today on my new C'dale at Momba in Dayton, Ohio. Great ride other than the 30 min long cloud burst, followed by a crazy thunderstorm, hail and another cloud burst. The way the trails are set up we were able to sprint back to an old horse barn using an ems extraction trail. Other than the storm(we were on the way out with 4-5 miles of trails left) it was a great ride. My new F5 handled everything that I could through at it including a 4 foot drop and me running into a tree.

Not the best stuff in the place, but the best of a bunch of short little vids from yesterday.

Well... we're in our mid-40's, and this was our first Mountain Bike trail. We started cycling again about a month ago, and have about 200 miles on paved trails in that time frame. It did little to prepare us for for our first mountain bike trail. :)

>>Our first rough trail<<

Various pics from the trail.

Good to have you around. It takes the heat off me being the old fart.

Thanks... glad to help...

I think I have a lot to learn about mountain biking... so I need to start reading some old threads...

Nice to meet a fellow MTBer from Ohio. Do you think Caesar's is worth the drive from the Dayton area? If you dont know no prob, as I'll prolly get there sometime. Have fun!

Yes... but the bike shop told us that it was probably a "bit" more technical than what _we_ were ready for (wish we had met them first!).

They said that East Fork had three different trails levels that were pretty good, and none as difficult as Caesar Creek's.

Downtown Dayton is only 35 miles away.

Talked to a guy who said that Ceaser's is almost always underwater :). If you ever find your self passing through the Dayton area check out MOMBA.
