Why? I usually keep my saddle fairly level. Is it to compensate for the sag in the fork? Or something else?

Bikegoon 03-14-09 08:39 AM

Saddle up

I tend to keep the nose of the saddle in a downward stance, just my riding style I guess, But I am very old school, sprawled out over the bike, more forward than most.

Haha, it is Chicago, and its a family owned shop, so I take a little bit extra on the markup, and the 10.25% sales tax here.

Just picked up this 08 Fire Mountain, my first actual MTB, from a friend. Looking forward to hitting the trails (hopefully tomorrow), though it seems lots of the singletrack in my area is closed for a bit longer until a bit more thoroughly dried out.

Anyway, it's a real mishmash of components - older STX 1x8 drivetrain and rear V brake, some random rear rim, and a comparatively fancy front end (with the exception of the fork) with an Arc stem, Titec hellbent bars and stock front disc. Assuming the drivetrain doesn't give me problems, I think the fork is the first thing I'll replace (DART 1). Stupid thing is a few hundred grams heavier than the frame is. Thinking about ebaying some lower end Manitou air fork, I've seen models with lockout features floating around for less than a hundred bucks.

Any thoughts?

Handbuilt custom by Doug Curtiss at Curtlo in 2003. Full XTR sans crank (XTR was too damm much)and brake levers. True Temper OX Platinum tubing. Marzocchi Atom Race 100 fork. Probably old school by now.

curiousincident 03-16-09 04:57 PM

A nice custom frame never goes out of style. OX Platinum is an amazing tube set, is it used much in MTB applications? Anyway, great looking bike.

heres my bike.

That top tube pad really takes me back:D

I had one of those on my old, old, old, GT BMX bike when I was a kid. Heck, they prob. still put them on BMX, I dunno. I don't follow BMX racing.

mikesbikester 03-19-09 02:18 PM

Thanks! The paint under the pad looks almost new actually, It's been on there for a long time. It was my dads first mountain bike and it is about 9 years older than me. I put the sram stuff on it for the 24 hours in the old pueblo race. Soon enough it'll get brakes and a crankset, then wheels. it weighs about 33 pounds.

This is what I've been riding for the last 2 or 3 years while I slowly build up my hardtail which will be my 1st mtb w/ suspension. I need to clean it.
