New wheelset and brakes on the "monkey bike" as it has come to be known.....
I would like to thank a nice BF(B2B) member for hooking me up with the brakes.

So ya wanna give some details on the wheels? I get the Sun hubs...but rims?

I can give you the details on the brakes. Those are the ones that B2B had on his epic when he drove the car into the garage...can you say "Roof Rack?" Ripped the bike in two. The fron caliper split open like a walnut and we had to heli-coil two of the caliper screws back in. One tube of epoxy later and we were happy enough with the job to order him a new set and pass the epic's off on some poor sap. I don't recall who he said he was sending them too.

What happened to your Elixir's?

Sun Disk Jockey hubs/ Sun Equilizer25 rims. Took them out for the first ride yesterday and rode some things that I would use the Enduro for most of the time. Time will tell, but if they hold up anything like my 321D's on my enduro I'll be a happy camper. The Brakes are the old Deore set from B2B. Nothing wrong with the Elixrs I just wanted a set of Hydros for the hardtail. They work fine.......not in the class with the Avids but they'll do fine on that bike. Oh, I also put on a new rear shifter( Sram X4) to replace the one I broke a while back.
I ran the stock stuff on the hardrock for a while to see if it was really as bad as most folks say. I had the wheelset hold up fine for about a year and a half and then I kinda messed up the rear and replaced it with a 223 that I had lying around. The front was fine when I took it off. I'm still running the stock X4 8sp drivetrain. If you keep things clean and lubed it shifts great and has held up well. An added bonus is that 8sp stuff is dirt cheap. And you can find a lot of good stuff on the 'bay. Not a whole lot left on the old monkey bike that it came with at this point.

Wheelset = LBS or online? Yeah...it's amazing what we think we "need" vs. what really works. I wasn't gonna go XT / SLX on my drivetrain for the Kona...but it fell into my lap. Prolly gonna cheap out on the FD.

Would you say that Deore Hydro's would stop a 200+ lbs dude okay with 203/185's? Way cheaper than Avids or Hayes.

solly..nice GT, dude...though the bars look rotated back too far causing the sweep to sweep downward. Could just be an illusion.

Hey guys, this is my new mountain bike - A 1995 Bear Valley SE.. I picked it up off of craigslist for only $100 dollars. The bike is in almost brand new condition! It would be rideable if it werent for the left crank falling off! Not a spec of mud anywhere on the fork!

This is my 09 Jamis Durango Hardtail, I'd actually converted it to do road" riding but found another bike to make a "commuter/tourer" for the road out of and put the Durango back to MTB status so I could ride some of the local trails!:thumb:

nice looking all purpose Jamis there bjjoondo.
I never found fenders helped me much at all. If you're going to get wet, you're going to get wet.

samburger 11-23-10 02:56 PM

This is experience from my motorcycle so I don't know how well it transfers over, but I've found the front fender to only help immediately after a rain with no traffic in front of me. And even then it's not perfect. Just helps keep the tire from flinging rain back up at me.

Thanks! :) I'm just a old guy , that likes CC riding, what some riders do on the DH and other MTB's is just amazing so the GP machine fit's me well. I tried a FS but just couldn't get used to it for some reason so I bought another Hardtail. LOL, your right about the "WET" , I went and took off the fenders, the bike even looks better, tks.

Take care, Ride Safe, have FUN! :)

Yes, I see you updated the picture. It does look even better. When I rode cross country It rained like 40+ days. At the beginning it was Cold so we tried to cover up and realized it only made it worse. Once we got further South/West (I went from Furthest Point North in Central PA to West Virginia to Colorado) it was starting to get warmer and warmer and the rain was a saving grace at many time in the middle of KY, KS, MS. Now tornadoes and hurricanes and blizzards are what you really gotta prepare for out there. :) For now, a removable rain suit with MANY vents, is your best option.

Picked up the 1999 Trek 6000 on Craigslist for $150. Upgraded front derailer to Deore XT, kept the rear LX which works well. Also put on Continental Vertical tires. I like the classic look to the bike. Needs a new engine.

Johnny Law 11-29-10 11:45 AM

man i love the old treks, i had a 2000 Trek 7000 for a while. Pretty much the same bike
