I had a budget of about $400 plus a pile of nice parts. I wanted a bike for short track XC racing. Here's what I came up with.

nice build for $400!!!
What's up with those tires though? A couple of Small Block 8's or Cross Marks won't brake the bank... |
Yeah, I went cheap on the tires ($20 clearance special). We'll see how they do.
|
Hey Andy_k, how are you liking the Continental Speed King 2.3 tires? Hows the traction??
|
I've only had them out once, and that just on a couple of firelanes and a rolling dirt/gravel/rock road, but I didn't have any troubles with traction. I was a little worried that they might be too wide for my rims but I didn't notice any problems (at around 35 psi).

Don't mind the box of toys behind the bike lol. This is my ride, I bought it off craigslist for 200 dollars. Its a 2001 Trek fuel 90. Pretty much stock except someone replaces the rear derailleur with a SRAM X9 and grip shifts, which are not for me BTW. and they replaced the tires with mythos sxc. Thats about it for now I have some upgrades in mind like the shifters, front fork and brakes. I'll keep you posted and I hope to get some action shots soon. |

I ended up shortening the fork travel from 100mm to 80mm to nimble it up a bit. With light 2.25" tubeless XC-race tires, it's about 20.5 pounds. I wish it had a third bottle mount like the Specialized did, but at least it does have room for four candy bars :D Gearing is still a 32-44 with an 11-32. Fast and faster :D |
Trek is sick. It's a lot like mine, in that it's Red and a Trek. Not so much like mine, because it's 33% lighter.

My bike.. nothing special like anything here. I got it when I was 13 or 14 and rode the hell out of it before I got my license at 16 and took the wheels off and put it in the attic of the garage. Got back into biking to lose weight (22 now) and it when new, looked like this:
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9554/2ymg315.jpg And here's how it sits now : http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/6...4066311674.jpg Mods I did when I was younger.. JensonUSA rhynolite/deore disc wheelset Bontrager Jones tires Hayes HMX/1 F/R Deore XT rear derailleur Deore hollowtech crankset Easton EA50 handlebar Deore LX Rapidfire/brake lever combo Profile? Bar ends Bell xenon headlamp New stuff as of the past few weeks.. 2 bottle cages Trek 3-LED tail lamp (old 90's stuff, stepdad didn't want it and told me I could have it) Trek seat pack with complete toolset, glueless patches, etc etc (stepdad gave that to me as well) Trek micro tire pump (same with the last two things) 350? MM 27.2 off brand cheapie heavy duty seat post The only original parts on the bike are the forks (cheap junk, never got around to replacing / upgrading) , front derailleur , handlebar stem. I'd LIKE to upgrade to newer LX or XT shift/brake combo, f/r derailleurs, and a nice cable set. Been LOVING the bike since I got back into riding. Here it is out on the Glacial-Drumlin Trail just west of Waukesha, WI. http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/8...7092381674.jpg The good part of upgrading this bike when I was younger was that I had a decent amount of new parts, and literally a few weeks after I got done with the Mongoose, I found a '95 Trek 830 in the garbage. This was some time in 2004. I completely brought all the paint down to bare metal, repainted, and restored this bike using the wheelset, crankset, handlebars, etc. that I took off the Mongoose. I don't even remember what I had to buy NEW but it was VERY LITTLE from what I remember. Here's the bike on the road tire setup: http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/6...8373756674.jpg And here it is on some Tioga Psycho's on the original wheel set (currently on, GF uses this bike when she rides with me in the woods around here) http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6...8373676674.jpg |

Nice ride. It looks simple and strong. Thats exactly what i like. What tires are you running?
The tires are Kenda 2.3s, which hook up nicely in the roots and mud. If I want something smoother rolling and faster, I am partial to Panaracer Fire XC Pros. But they tend to block up in the mud. |

this rig has been through the dirt a few times. Also I'll be on it for 3300 miles this summer from San Diego-Virginia Beach. Can't want to save up for another mtb after the trip.

The best looking DJ bike I've ever seen. The fact that the seat isn't pointed straight up makes it even look that much better. Job well done.

Nice bike, frame? What route you taking? I lived in both SD and VB, SD is the far better city. If you're doing the cross country now, get ready for hot and MUGGY in VB!
