If I'm going 40km/h+, down a hill, and I start to pedal, the speed immediately drops to about 20km/h, which affects my avg speed, etc.
Do you recommend the Cateye Strada Cadence, and the Cateye brand in general? My budget is about $60 (I know, not much).
Thanks for the help guys.

i know virtually nothing about cycle computers. for a long time my legs were my computer. i just got the blackburn delphi wireless with wired cadence. it was cheap and i like it. before that i had a cheapo supermarket speedo which i really like. simple.

I'd agree cadence can be very useful to a newbie . . . helps you learn your target rythym.

I see...the Cateye Strada Cadence seems similar to your Blackburn computer. How much did you pay for your comp.?
You guys are really quick to respond!

It is still done by habbit forming. Once spinning becomes second nature you wont need it, or bother to look at it. I say spend the extra $on a nice wireless 'puter. They have clocks on them so you can count and time at first, so you can get a feel for proper cadence by counting. but thats my opinion. ymmv.

No, I was just responding to the question about the brand in general.

There are times that I wish I had just flat. It's not that hilly here usually 30-40 per, but some times I want nothing but flat. I can't get that out of my driveway.

I found when I upgraded to a computer w/cadence that I confirmed what I already knew... by counting my pedal strokes for 15 or 30 seconds while holding a cadence I could figure it out. For 1-2 years, I'd finish rides, look at Average Cadence and it was ALWAYS between 80 and 85...max was typically in the 115 range. I got a second bike, installed a "second bike" kit for the same computer so I could use the same head unit but didn't get cadence, figuring if I wanted it, I could just move the sender over from my first bike. The cadence sensor is still on the first bike.

I know the feeling. It's hilly here in the Hudson Valley and sometimes I just don't want to work that hard.

I have to get in my car and drive somewhere to find a nice, quiet, flat stretch.

thats an easy one. ride now. you'll throw it up and lose more weight. i did that on a ride once. i stopped at a bakery at the bottom of the worst hill on the route. ate a sausage in a bagette and immediately started the climb. Half way up the sausage came out.

All I know is that I find myself checking my cadence all the time. If I'm trying to push myself to get a little stronger, I find that after a while, I sometimes drop off. It's nothing more than a tool. Can't hurt to have it, but can be used when wanted. There are a lot of ways to use cadence in training. For example, I find myself slowing down on hills. So, I sometimes do this thing where I pick a marker part way up and see if I can hold my cadence to it. That isn't a time I want to be counting. When I get so that I can do it, I pick a point farther up the hill. After a while, the hill is easier.
