A easy story i wrote that landed me a column in the club newsletter :
The First Snowfall
By RFKC
Today I wake up to the sound of rain. Its a painful sound to me. Time to get up, Its 645am and The ride leaves at 8 o’clock sharp! I turn on the news, and the weather forecaster says, As soon as the rain stops its going to get cold and there could be snow flurries tonight. That just makes me want to ride even more. I walk out into the kitchen and notice the temperature is 38F, “ I must ride, “ I say to myself. “if I want to do well next racing season” I load up with all my gear and I step outside. It is 740 at this point and the roads are still wet. “ Time to get this rolling” I push off and head for a bike shop here in town. I get there at about 750 and to my amazement Ed is the only one there. “ I guess the rain scared everyone off today! “ I then tell Ed that I would rather not ride alone and if he wants company I will ride with him up to Mill inn in his car.
I ride home and get changed, Confidence boosted from showing up when everyone else hadn’t. That’s a real bummer though. I need the miles before winter breaks loose.
Ed and I drive up to Mill Inn for breakfast and sit in the front. Seems more interesting up here! I have been reading his books and he talks highly about the Biscuits and gravy here, so I order a full order. When it comes about 2 minutes later it is hot and delicious. And the gravy is great!
Both ways Ed and I talk about Bikes and Good stories about them, and then as soon as it started I was home again. I say thanks to Ed before he departs and I go inside.
Later that day I sit in the basement, “ I wish I would have rode up there, It was a short ride. I would have been able to try this out” As I sit there on the bike looking at my new Garmin Edge 500 Gps system. Now I am stuck here, pedaling you on the trainer. I look out the window and it is snowing lightly and the wind is whipping it around. I look back at the TV and my mind goes blank. Think about racing, the air rushing by and Shifting of gears…. I up shift a gear and my speed rises to 30mph. This is the training I need to reach my goal next year.
As I sit there on the trainer pedaling away with my Heart rate monitor going “ beep – beep “ every time my heart beats, I fall into a trance. My mind thinks about being in that race. I’m riding next to the best, I’m riding my first race of the season. There are people lining the streets and cheering. “ Yes. THIS is what I live for!” I open my eyes to see that I am not there, and it crushes me. It’s ok; If I train hard I could have a shot at winning that race. It would take a lot of effort but I will not give in. First I need to train. On the trainer or out in the cold, I don’t care. Why you ask? Because as soon as racing season comes next year I want to be ready. I am going to train everyday. Hills, Flats, Corners, Intervals, Sprints I want to be the best and I will not stop until I am.
So here I am, again, riding the trainer. Oh how I hate the Trainer.

Handlebars? What handlebars? I see some sort of integrated stem thingy with a Garmin and then it just ends. I have no idea what's holding those hoods/shifters up in the air.
