hmmmm...I may have to consider a tri if I can use a fred-snorkle. Breathing is the thing I hate most about swimming. Although I might have to wait until they allow fins too.

Same here. I swam YMCA league until mid high school. 3 nights/wk 1 mile warmup then practice. I used to walk home from the pool in the winter and my hair would be ice by the time I got home. I was also a YMCA scuba instructor at 14.

You don't need to know how to swim to be a diver . . . that's what the underwater breathing apparatus is for. And the fins.
Until you have an equipment failure. Then you die.

All the best divers I knew were free divers. I was good for 1:20.

I'm sure. But for all those "just want to finish" folks, it seems like they'd be all over it.

There was a sneaky guy using fins at IMFL last year. That is not allowed.

I would think a snorkel would just get kicked around so much that it wouldn't be worth the energy of having it.

He claimed that he didn't use them, he just found them on his way out to start the swim.

Those that want to finish should learn to swim. Unless training wheels are allowed on the bikes too....

how dirty does the swimming stage get? is it as rough as water polo with people being grabbed from underneath, pinching and punching etc.

Not intentionally. But yeah, you'll get knocked around quite a bit.
