I swam like a fish as a kid. Had my SCUBA certification as soon as I turned 12.
When I was younger I never did this "proper" swimming stuff though.

Swimming was what got me through rehab when I blew up my knee--before I started riding a bike. I could not stand the repetitive mind-numbing exercises that are generally recommended.

Just sayin', scuba diving has nothing to do with swimming. I swim like a rock but was a certified diver.
You don't need to know how to swim to be a diver . . . that's what the underwater breathing apparatus is for. And the fins.

Very true. Though, for each of my certifications there was a decent swim test. But that type of swimming is more like "not drowning."

I had to have a lifeguard certificate in addition to those way, way back when I was one. This certificate proved that you could perform water rescue and knew water safety. I think this was called water safety instructor back then, but after looking it up, it was more rescue based than preparing one to train others like the course offered today.

As a child (about 8) I almost drowned in a pond near home. As a result I had a very bad fear of the water. I didn't get over it until my senior year of high school. In college I took swimming classes (beginning with intermediate) and then went through Advanced Lifesaving and Water Safety Instruction. The most important thing I learned was the proper form for many of the strokes. Knowing the form, and how to breathe properly when swimming allowed me to conquer that fear of "not being able to breathe".
I have no illusions about still being able to swim any distance now, but at least I'm comfortable in the water which is a big part of the battle.
