Went up to Hardwood Hills for the O-Cup/Canada Cup race this weekend. What an awesome course. A few of the honoured participants were 3 girls from the Chinese National Mtn Bike team (they smoked everyone and finished 1 2 3) and Gary Fisher was also there signing autographs and racing in the Sport mens field (he placed 5th). I got him to sign my Canada Cup plate and thanked him for coming up with a crazy sport called Mtn biking. I struggled to a 13th place while Bradyn again smoked it and came in 3rd. He got his plaque presented by Gary and was super stoked. AWESOME!

Sounds like you guys had a great time up there

I've had two sets of Formula Hubs (IRO - same thing...) and they've both been really good to me. They are pretty good hubs for the money and I've heard a lot of things about people stripping the fixed side of the Quando / Sovos flip-flops so if you want to keep them for a little while, the Formula's are a good pick and not significantly more money. I don't know much about the Surly hubs but I'd imagine that they are good - any opinions on those?

On a side note - I just realized that about 10 posts I've made on this forum aren't there. The "Preview / Submit" buttons are on the opposite sides of virtually every other forum that I post on so I write a post and when I think I've submitted it - I've only just previewed it and it never shows up! I need to keep that in mind... Otherwise even this post won't ever even show up!

How old were they? They do train them at very young ages. Probably before they started walking. :D

I got a pic with one of them. Very sweet girls altho their "handler" was a bit rough around the edges. If I had to guess I would say they were in their late teens-early 20's. Judging by the method in which they destroyed the field I would say they have been at it for a while. I do have to say that they all had really bad acne tho....hmmmm.

that's the steroids rearing their ugly heads.

god bless the motherland and her unrelenting, brutalistic quest for athletic domination.

i've been using a surly flip flop rear for a while and no complaints. i know a while ago urbane wouldn't stock them because of some problem with the threading but the "new" surlys are fine. a good deal and granted, not the smoothest of bearings but they work fine. As you can tell i'm not a big fan of buying fancy parts.

I like my Surly flipflop. Only complaint is the 'cones' aren't great and they tend to be tricky to get tight without grinding. Otherwise bombproof so far.

Jer, check your PM.

Put Suzue juniors in there too as hubs to stay away from.

I should also say that I have a pair of Sovos hubs on my winter bike and they've been fine thus far but I've been told that I shouldn't do a lot of skidding because they are likely to strip and Kerry (sp?) @ Urbane said that they've had a bunch of Quando hubs come back in with stripped threads in the last little while...

On my winter bike it's not that big of a deal because most skidding is done either on snow or wet roads so there isn't a ton of resistance...

canice 06-18-07 11:15 AM

i have ridden a quando for almost a year with no problems (knock on wood) but i am a super lightweight anyway so that doesn't say much.

jeremywhitehorn 06-18-07 11:26 AM

i'm still using the first fixed gear hub i ever bought, which is a quando. cones are probably pitted but it was cheap and i definately got my money's worth.

While I'm trying not to curse myself, my quando is still holding up after nearly 2 years of year-round, daily riding (with little brake use) and a ~160lb rider. YMMV. :)

Sounds like you had a great day. Dave and I had pretty fun day driving around trying to find food and riding at Ravenshoe. Then, on the way back down the 404 his bike came off the trunk-rack at 120km/h. We pulled over and I was running back along the shoulder (wondering how in the hell I was going to get it out of the middle of the hwy) when it got smacked by another car. Bike no more. Headtube sheared right off. No idea if he'll be able to get it covered in any way.

and that's as much as I want to talk about it! It was a terrible way to end a great day. :S

DAMN!!! At least the bike didn't cause horrific damage to someone elses car or it would have been worse. Did you manage to get the carcass?
yeah...food can be a hassle up there. Did you get to enjoy the surly service at the McCowan Coffee Time? She is even surlier than me on a bad day.

Yeah.. it did do body damage to the other car, but nothing to severe.

We skipped the coffee time on recommendation from a local and found a pizza shop. meat lovers pizza pre-ride? Probably not one of our smartest moments.
