I have the SB2, and it's awesome. I don't have any experience with the SB3 though (nor any other system), so I can't give any comparison. If I was to upgrade I think I would potentially either buy a SB1 or another SB2 and mount one on the bars and one on my helmet. The SB2 on its own (helmet mounted) felt plenty bright to me during the 24-hr race this past Summer (and some nighttime assaults on the Don :P).

I lost my front wheel during the day on a weekday on campus, so I'm not that surprised. I wouldn't leave anything 'free' at all on campus, especially if the bike is nice at all.

Call Sam and Anais at UTW. I know she is more than happy to do bike clothing alterations when they are not super busy with bags.

Just returned from the Great White North Dog Sled Races TM. What a fantastic time. The races were over 2 days with sprint 4Mi and 6Mi races. 4 had 4 dogs and 6 had 6 dogs and they really motor...we estimated about 25-30 km on the flats. There was also a 40 mile event both days...those teams usually had 8 dogs. The Jamaican team only did sprint races and got 2nd place both days.....the prevalent shout-out for them was "MUSH MON!" I had forgotten what small town life is like....everyone waves at ya when you pass by. Scored large at the community silent auction...with my buddy's daughter hovering over our cherished bids and jumping in with the poach for us at the last minute. Heat and massage lumbar pillow FTW! They are planning a 3 day, 250 mile Iditarod qualifier next year and I will be there with bells on...well actually no bells as they distract the dogs...good thing we asked! Had to stay an extra night as the highway was closed yesterday afternoon...whiteouts. I was terribly bummed to have to stay an extra night. It was -27 without the wind when we woke up this morning. 100kms of hardpack snow driving have me feeling ready for the Amateur Rally Championships.

Hey Nerdsgirth....It dawned on me that Wil has a nice Miele with all Campy he has been trying to sell. I am pretty sure you could pick up the bike....strip it for the parts... resell frameset and do very well for yourself. I will talk to him later and see if he still has it.

Hot Dog!
Lucky punk to get out there.. My uncle in Haliburton was so excited about the race - check Rick Mercer's coverage online.

I wore the goggles today and yesterday as well - I felt a little nerdy because there wasn't snow blowing all over the place but they kept my face warm and my eyes dry... plus I got to look like snake-eyes from GI JOE which is always a plus!

Lucky indeed, Keith, that sounds awesome...
Was the race in Haliburton? What's your uncles name Mark? My whole family is from Haliburton - if he grew up there I'd put money on my folks knowing him...

cool, i'll ask them about it. i need to speak to someone who understands the idiosyncrasies of bike-related clothing.

I don't normally think too much about the aesthetics of headsets, but WOW:

ps. yes, that's mahogany.

jeremywhitehorn 02-11-08 03:59 PM

i'm impressed so long as that's not some new "standard".

EDIT: actually, isn't that the $650 headset? i'd want a little flash for that price. perhaps a diamond or two...

Did they have the road cleared all they way into rain lake? I've never been there in the winter, but that's my favourite entrance to the park.

Also, speaking of ice and racing, this is old news but here's the official poster

Nothing says "I'm trying too hard" like riding around on a bike like this. It bugs me. I can appreciate the craftsmanship I suppose. Although Brooks Saddle + zero setback seatpost = ridiculously forward saddle position. Doesn't look too comfortable at all. And what's up with that chainring? Not drilled for lightness I would imagine, considering the wood rims. It looks like a steering wheel from a 1970's Firebird. I know I'm like the only one in the world who doesn't like the whole "Vanilla Cycles" esthetic so what do I know.

If you were the only one who didn't appreciate the "Vanilla Aesthetic", then guys wouldn't be out there blowing $1700 on Nagasawa frames.

somnambulant 02-11-08 06:30 PM

I don't really like that bike either.. the "been in the oven too long" comment pretty much summed it up for me. I do however like a lot of stuff that Sascha White has put out, and I don't see the connection at all between the Vanilla/Speedvagen stuff and that bike. For example, I think these bikes are dreamy:

http://www.velonews.com/files/images/3_1.jpg
http://www.velonews.com/files/images/4_0.jpg
http://www.vanillabicycles.com/frame...ee/1/lrg/1.jpg
http://www.vanillabicycles.com/frame...s/3/lrg/12.jpg
http://www.vanillabicycles.com/frame...s/3/lrg/13.jpg

The attention to detail is pretty mind blowing... although the 5-yr wait list is pretty unreal.

Of the stuff I saw from the NAHMBS, I'm really really digging the aesthetic of this new company, 333Fab. eg:

http://www.333fab.com/images/frame1.jpg

Ira Ryan's stuff looks pretty nice too. Mmmm... Rapha Continental team bike:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1104/...497891.jpg?v=0
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1342/...76f5fa.jpg?v=0

ps. I originally made a typo of 'summed' as 'summer'. *wistful sigh*

Good point. Which is kind of silly considering that Nagasawas are beautiful (and right up my alley) but there are similar custom frames for much less coin. When you fork out money for something like a Vanilla you are paying for a lot of detail work and time etc. In that sense it makes more sense I suppose. It may not be my cup of tea but I understand why someone with money to burn would pay for that. Paying $1700 for a Nagasawa is kind of pointless, when you can get something like a Mercian for example for under half of that.

Yeah...it was "cleared"....that means 2 inches of fresh snow on a bed of glare ice. They did sand it a bit on the corners tho. It's all about the snow tires.

One of my new tires.

Well they are similar in the sense that they have more bling than function, in terms of what you are paying for. Not that I'm knocking that. I just like a different kind of bling I guess. Of that bunch, I like the white lugged cross bike the best. The city bike is pretty cool too, but one of things I dislike about the Vanilla stuff is that his paint jobs look like they were done with super sweet and rich melted ice cream. It makes me feel kind of queasy.

Officer: (another pregnant pause) You say you're seeing bicycles with

Caller: Yes. I saw a tall guy with a big bushy beard on Main Street riding a
beat-up, junky bicycle with STUDDED TIRES.
Officer: (starting to sound a lot like Frank Nelson of old time radio shows)
I see. And was there a pink elephant, too?
Caller: On his helmet?
Officer: (positively dripping sarcasm now) No, riding a junky bicycle with
studded tires right behind the first guy!
Caller: (getting annoyed now) C'mon, I'm serious. This guy is breaking the

Officer: Why, was he also robbing pedestrians?
Caller: What, the cyclist?
Officer: NO, THE PINK ELEPHANT!

The sound is virtually useless when riding. It'll pick up your vioce if you carry it. On a sunny day it's awesome. I've made better frame mounts with cheap stuff from Home depot, so I can get right down low off the fork. Do you sell the bike version with the elbow mounts? I love mine and have made several gigs of video. You hardly notice it when using it on your helmet, though the low bike position gives a better sensation of speed. The high energy AAA requirements make at least 2 pairs of rechargeables a must, and a couple 2G SD cards if your to be out for a while. Lower light recordings bite it large, but dusk isn't too too bad. I'm going to try and adjust the darker ones in some video editting wares to see if I can make them better. I'm still al little bummed I haven't had a good traffic rip since I got it. Water and shockproof...right up my alley of clumsiness. All said, I love it. I wish I had 6 of them for all angle recording. A film maker friend of mine has snatched up a few days of recording for something he's working on.

The best part about Keiths story was me doing his work today! hahaha jk

Here is something I came upon. Way too big for me (58x58) but is going to make a wicked project. The rear wheel was replaced at some point and the original shifters are long gone but the coolest front derailer is there. Also needs the correct cable guides in a few spots. If I was a jerk I'd say it would make a very sweet S.S. .......but I' not a jerk. haha
