No, it's an Alpaca wool one, Cannondale branded. I ordered it from Nashbar a while back along with a couple of other cool-weather clothing items. That were 50% off. It was nice this morning because of the ice pellets that were still coming down a little on my way in. I have sensitive cheeks..

I'm supposed to head off to Racer Sportif ASAP to see their Gaurne (sp?) Eskimos..I've been told they are hella warm.

Yeah.. softest. wool. evar. It's actually quite thin. I always find that wool has a really wide comfort range for temperature. I <3 the wool jersey I got via Keith last year. I've worn it when the temperatures in the 20's and been comfortable, and I've also worn it (with just a DeFeet Un D Shurt tank top base layer) in 5 degrees and found it quite comfortable.

Rode the planet-x this morning actually. The tires on the urbanite are totally shot, so I would have totally zero traction in this type of slop. Hooray for cx bikes. \o/

I've been considering some winter cycling shoes too, so I'd be interested to get some subjective opinions on those. I was considering just going for the cheapie Exustars at MEC unless someone told me otherwise, although I haven't actually checked them out.

I was talking with John (who rides clips + straps) about this and he apparently goes to Value Village, etc and uses ski boots (after cutting off the toe lips).

Neat idea with the cross country ski boot idea. I used to steal overshoes from corporate elevator boot areas and cut a hole for the cleat when I messed. Without cutting the hole also worked with clips n' straps, albeit kinda clunky.

Just got off the phone with Racer Sportif.. they have the Eskimos with the MTB sole (despite the road sole on the site) in 43 and then 47 ... a week to ten days for next shipment. These puppies will run in the 200$zone.

i don't know, those cheap exustars just look like a regular pair of mtb shoes with a neoprene ankle cuff. i think i might just pick up a pair of neoprene socks and rock them in my sneakers with the clips n' straps n' such...

Nice shoes, indeed... I'm thinking I should've got booties at the bike sale too, I rocked the bargain booties ala Sobey's bags last night. I might swing by MEC soon to check the stuff out. My cannondale shoes (mountain) were sopping wet after getting to my daughter pre-bagging, but I was able to put them on a heat register and dry the insoles in the dryer thankfully. Full rainsuit with no foot/bootie coverage is balls.

Felt dicey at first this morning, some over-paranoia - brought the roadie in after giving it some pre-emptive last minute lube to try and ease the pain. Wool balaclava FTW indeed, I got one from the Bay a couple weeks ago ($20 or 30 + 25% discount I think) which seems to work out nicely combined with a scarf around the neck (or a turtle neck).

I've only got cold in the fingertips and toes (from both windchill and from wet) so far, mainly due to poor equipment choices - I need cooler gloves so my hands don't sweat and wet them up, also waterproof would be nice.

Time to get the MTB ready too I guess, definitely ought to get some fenders for the roadbike. MEC... mmhmm.

Racer just called ... I wear a 44 roadie shoe and they have a 45 Eskimo they just found... hmm lunch ride to Runnymede? I guess I'll need new Time cleats as well...I wonder if current booties will fit?

we've got the lake 300's. i've written a review in this thread somewhere, but i have to add a less favourable point: i just noticed the other day that the neoprene upper is starting to show a great deal of wear. i think this will be the 3rd season wearing them, and i have worn them quite extensively. hopefully won't be an issue with the booties. (hee hee... booties)

i've been riding my re-built old hybrid this week. still not totally "dialed in" but it seemed good in the conditions this morning. using platforms with hiking boots though, and i don't like it. they're too stiff and bulky, and even with secured dork straps my ankles eventually start being exposed. i also hate the feeling of shoes sliding around, even with good treads on metal pedals.

i just got word via our executive director that he's declared a snow day! we're closing at 1:00 but still getting paid for the full day! go non-profit work place!

+1 this is what i did when i messed last winter. mec kayaking socks ftw. although they aren't waterproof they'll keep you warm if you do get wet.

Yeah, that's the thing with neoprene, at least the ones I have as well. Mine aren't the same as Colin's, but they're also not waterproof... I guess it isn't "closed cell" neoprene. My SIDI's also fit so snugly that even wearing a thin pair of wicking socks + the neoprenes makes for an uncomfortable squeeze (which then results in chilly feet). I could easily wear them in my Shimano shoes, but because they're so padded (skate shoe style) when those things get wet it seems like it takes days before they're totally dry.

I'm either going to get some better booties (mec packcloth ones work decently, but they look ******** and also mine are starting to disintegrate at the seams) or invest in some winter cycling shoes.

I NEED some better wintering options .. I'm tired of the frozen feet when out for such a short time... it's no fun.. I'd rather not have to keep going in and out at the Dufferin Ice Race kinda thing.

hey whatever you go with for winter SPD just be sure to maybe go 2 (euro) sizes up from your usual fit to accommodate wool & neoprene socks and you'll be gold, being able to move you toes/foot mussels tres importante to avoid uncomfortable cold tootsies. Maybe 1 size instead of 2? I do 2 sizes but that's for all day outdoors, I may just do one size up this year as I will try to avoid being out all day
