Funny enough I missed it by about 5 minutes. I got in my door and my buddy calls rambling about massive fireballs. I had no idea what he was talking about till this morning. I did get to bomb down danforth while it was closed off to cars and dodge drunk people and golf carts at speed, which was more than worth getting on my bike for.

That was me hollering "hey" to you yesterday in MEC, Stuart - I probably should've come over and introduced myself but I just wanted to get my cleaner stuff and go home and dry off heh. Sorry. However the cashier that served me (Angela?) was particularly attractive, which was nice.

canice 08-10-08 10:17 PM

does anyone have a flat, painless route to get to eglinton/dvp? i took a new job there and i hate taking train-transfer-train-bus-walk to toronto's outer wasteland. it takes an hour. it can't possibly take an hour to ride there, could it?

looking presentable with minimum sweat would be nice.

thanks!

If anyone's looking for some new wheels, here's a pretty good deal on Craigslist.

From where? I regularly go to Eg/DVP from both east side (Whitby) and my place (Parkdale). From home, I take College/Carlton over to Parliament, upto Bloor, to Broadview, to O'Connor over to Bermondsey and cut through to Eglinton that way - Bermondsey is terrible in places road surface wise, but there's minimal hills. From Whitby I take Kingston Road back into town to either Lawrence and wind through (last time I went right across to Pharmacy then south to Eg) or just Kingston Road to Eglinton then right over. Like Kingston Road, Eglinton has the rollers, as does Lawrence in places - the worst being the bridges over the RT, but they're not /too/ bad.

There's a ton of work going on on Warden, so I'd avoid that for the time being.

Cooler weather right now = less sweaty, I guess but that's about all I have.

Until the snow flies, you could ride right up the don recreational trail and then across eglinton.

I think that's a given at any place, some more so than others. Especially MEC.

take the danforth, go north on donlands, merge into millwood, right on overlea, left on donmills ... you're at don mills and eglinton which is really close to the dvp without having to do the eglinton death dip

That's what I was thinking. Oh man... if only I had a mtb ride along my commute! :P Not that you'd have to ride offroad, but you know, I'm just sayin' is alls. :)

somnambulant 08-11-08 06:58 AM

Hey guys, does anyone know where I can rent a tandem bike? Or does anyone on the board have one I can rent?
I don't have a car but still want to pick someone up on a date... I thought it might be fun.

Thats the route I use. In the morning/afternoon the bus/taxi/bikelanes are nice and keep the majority of the traffic away from you.

People actually respect those b/t/b lanes on Overlea? Every time I head up/down Bay, I tend to see quite a few "unmarked taxis" and sedan-sized buses

32flavours 08-11-08 08:23 AM

AND if you feel like playing hooky, you can go to the science centre!

What job did you get, Canice?

In bike related news, I just remembered that I hit a pedestrian yesterday who darted out a foot in front of me from behind a stopped car on Spadina. She will probably have a big bruise today. At least she was apologetic. Scared the bejeebus out of me.

I used to ride this route to Sheppard and rarely had any problems. Also not alot of traffic leaving the city along that route at 7am.

also, thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. i'll do a test run later this week.

dom: the new job's copy editing for metro. why any newspaper/media outlet has an office north of bloor is beyond me...

I've lived at both Eglinton & Laird and Eglinton & DVP and any of the routes suggested are good - personally I'd take Tony's (Exhibit X) route to get to work on time in the morning and Brad's route to get home as it'll be a nicer, more scenic ride.

PS - you could ride up with Michelle Campbell, her office got moved from Liberty / Dufferin to Eglinton & DVP as well... I'd have quit.

Just think of it as fun riding time! I currently commute both to Bathurst/401 (Rotman Research Institute) and UTScarborough campus. I've actually come to enjoy it, despite some crappy traffic and roads.

jeremywhitehorn 08-11-08 09:04 AM

that's quite a commute. here i was moaning to myself about having to go to queen and jarvis every day...

on an unrelated note i now have an extra media player that i don't need (after buying an ipod) if anyone's interested in buying or trading for it or such. it's a sansa e250 that i literally used once. plus it comes loaded with lucas brunelle videos! thought i'd ask here before it hits craigslist. shoot me a pm if you're interested.

Yeah good call if you're going to west of the DVP... or Millwood to Laird, depending where on Eg you need to be. I'd just take every precaution to avoid the dip into Eg/Leslie/Sunnybrook area IMO.

I'd take O'Connor to Pape to Millwood just so I'm not going far east before cutting west again... both Donlands and Pape are fine for riding on though, and Danforth is never an issue for me. I blasted upto Main/Danforth this morning in a gnats pube over 30 minutes... felt PUMPED.

Anyone interested in a Nitto b123 aluminum track bar (unused) 25.4 with shims, if you want them. Not going to use it. Please PM me.

I posted a pic of my bike in the Fixed/SS thread pics and got lambasted for my bar installation.

Little did I know that there's a Toronto Rides thread where we are all much more civilized and polite.

I hope to be able to contribute as much as possibile here, and get all the inside jokes and references in due time.
