I've tried lots of different computers over the years:
several Cateyes, the crappy mec one, specialized, shimano and this year I'm gonna try Vetta if the distributor can get their **** together for a few moments. Best so far= specialized speedzone elite. OK price (~100 at the time) lots of features with good layout and reliable. I'm keen to try the vetta though, I like the look of it... especially the smart backlight. I'm trying the corded version to cut out interference from LED lights. |

ps. make sure you got bells on your bikes, y'alls. it's the no-bell prize time of the year. |

I've got a MEC wireless computer on the IRO right now - without sounding biased, it's a pile of crap - way too much interference on almost every ride I take so I'm looking at replacing it. I don't want the wired version if I can help it (though I know the MEC one to be reliable, I've used one on my roadie for a long time) - so I'm probably looking at Cateye or some such... any recommendations? Main things I care about are: Odometer, max speed, trip distance/avg/time and a clock.

I wear contacts. I have two week disposibles, and I wear them longer than that. Apparently they're all the same contacts (daily, monthly etc). Costco usually has the best deals, but I got mine at Hakim because they had a special on.

hrm.. I just realized my mtb lighting system is LED-based. I wonder what that'll do to ye olde garmine.

even the GPS i've got suffers from some interference so i'd say the best bet is a wired unit for ODO accuracy (to avoid ugly wiring, just run the wire on the inside of the fork and use clear coloured tape to secure it). |
Just a heads up that the community bicycle networks gear swap is on this Sunday. No consignment this year, so no idea what the pickin's will be like

if you want, i've got a nice cateve mitty here (wired) that is reliable and yours if you want it.
Nice to see a big bunch of people tonight out - glad I made it intime, I didn't bother heading out on the spit - wasn't feeling all too confident with riding brakeless in the close-quarter pack with just the turtle lights AND having the impaling stick of a steerer tube still out... I've been up since 5:15 so I wasn't very sociable, just stood around but hey whatever :p Good ride other than the one F word. |
Thanks all for the tips on contacts.. guess I'll try for dailies since I'll probably use them infrequently (at first).
On bike computers: I like my wired VDO computer from MEC, and previously have enjoyed a Cateye -- I forget which one, but it had cadence. For clean wiring, get a front wheel sensor model (unless you need cadence or care how many km you put on the trainer), and run the cable down the front brake housing and the back of the fork. |
nice ride, nice to put faces to names... kinda cold to go gloveless though. cant wait for next week.
you laughed then... but that $5 i found, bought me pizza on the way home :D |
nice ride indeed, good turnout :) good to meet everyone who came out!

Great to see everyone tonight. Needless to say it was pretty balls for me but all in fun. Not sure if the highlight was rear ending Noel, getting two flats or being taken out by the x up king and going over the bars. Atleast the bike survived! haha see you all next week.

anyone in this city have a bern helmet? how the hell do i get my hands on one?? every site out there has a completely RANDOM selection, the closest ive come is the kayak version, what gives?! Air Can didn't give a shat about the size or weight of my box. I love styling the baggage ladies. |
bumed i miss the ride tonight but i had sweet jays tickets, 6th row behind home plate
unfortunately it went into 14 innings and past midnight zzz |
damn!
why do wednesday rides end up in me getting home after 4am? ride -> bovine -> sneaks decent ride tonight. not quite the rubber legged ride of last week, but still fun. party. |

I have a Surly 20t, which I was planning to buy (as in I ordered it and it came in and is at my house right now but I haven't used it or paid for it yet), so if you are really desperate for a 20 I could let it go (I got 17/18/19/20) |

i did take pictures of my jerseys, by the way. then a certain someone decided he wanted to try them all on. and still hasn't. (hint hint) the one i keeping anyway was too small, so i don't know if you'd be interested... but i hadn't forgotten! perhaps i'll bring them to the swap on sunday. |
ps. bee-you-ti-ful sunrise this morning! i've recently started taking king in the morning as well as the evening instead of queen and the view of downtown heading east at 7am today was spectacular!
|
Man I'm blurry eyed this morning...Is that what happens when you go to bed right after a 'safety' briefing? Ugh...
Ah well :) Got to try to rest my quads in prep for the tower climb... though past climbs have only sucked for me cardio-wise, so we'll see I guess. I also can't believe there's so much difference in riding fixed clipped in, what a wonderful experience compared to platforms (which I ran on my winter fixed bike). I'll end up taking this MEC wireless computer back, obviously wired is the way to go (I should've asked this question before purchasing I guess, oh well - I know now :)) - my wired MEC Filzer is still holding up strong just fine. |

What impressed me was that most of the faces there last night were totally new to me, which is always a good thing for cycling. @nerdsgirth - sounds really cool, I hope to visit back home this summer sometime and will try to take a bike back with me there. Should be interesting going back to a left-side of the road deal ;) I also want to ride down to the US again this year, No real reason other than just doing it. We could always cross over on the Niagara fixed weekend, too. |
I re-adjusted the brakes on my Roger last night... I nearly launched myself over the bars about 15 times this morning on my way to work. :P
|
goood morning, the forceast for today calls for sunny skies and glorious warmth, tomorrow to be an improvement on today.
feh! totally missed wednesday ride, due mostly to lack of being in loop. im getting an itch to ride with some peeps out there, such rides would help :D (i was joking about the india bike, but if i had it i would paint it ******** colors and ride it only on critical masses). |
anyone know a good route out to the south east end of scarborough? i've ridden lawrence and it made me feer for my life, so i'm looking for something new ... i'm thinking danforth to kingston to lawrence (lawrence east of morning side is fine), anyone done that?
