In the Race to Office Space Wes opened a bigger bag of courage today to get past the people watching his screen to see he was working. Shamil's multitasking skills just MIGHT have hurt him at the end of this stage. I'm Andrew mills and I'll see you tomorrow at the start of day Thursday, almost the weekend.

I hit Greg's Icecream today at lunch. One scoop of chocolate chocolate chip, one scoop of ginger. Oh hells yes. I'm finally not afraid to say it, Winter is over!

Of course, the insane number of cyclists on College Street this morning is also a sure sign.

Ginger eh? I saw an ice cream truck doing the rounds last night - a definite sign of the changing weather.

Just went for a t-shirt only cruise around Whitby for lunch, barring the wind it's just perfect out there - stopped in at a nice Scottish Bakery and got some long-forgotten home food favourites for an afternoon treat :)

I've got a MEC wireless computer on the IRO right now - without sounding biased, it's a pile of crap - way too much interference on almost every ride I take so I'm looking at replacing it. I don't want the wired version if I can help it (though I know the MEC one to be reliable, I've used one on my roadie for a long time) - so I'm probably looking at Cateye or some such... any recommendations? Main things I care about are: Odometer, max speed, trip distance/avg/time and a clock.

Mike:

I have a Surly 20t, which I was planning to buy (as in I ordered it and it came in and is at my house right now but I haven't used it or paid for it yet), so if you are really desperate for a 20 I could let it go (I got 17/18/19/20)

and alot of em forgot how to ride properly/safely it seems...i almost crashed my bike in to a lady riding the wrongway on parliament the other day...she just came out from behind some cars and started riding the wrong way without looking...

freecycle 04-16-08 12:54 PM

i have a really nice computer actually, i forget the brand but ill check it for you, never gives me crap, except when near computers... spins up to max speed and goes nuts.

its wireless =D ill dig up the make for you

on that stream, anybody know shops around here that sell bern helmets? ive been eyeing the baker and the wattsmodels, they look slick.

Was calling 'on your left, keep you line' all the way along Queen this morning.

That computer almost made me swear off wireless computers forever. Used a wired cateye for years with no issues. Haven't had any issues with interference with the Garmin, but it's $$$.

That will do nothing but confuse them and probably make things worse. Especially the 'keep your line' bit. :) Saying 'on your left' just makes them quickly look to their left, which for many riders is enough on its own to throw them off balance. I just wait for an opportunity to pass and give 'em lots of space. :)

Hmmm, Garmin is a bit much for now - maybe I'll go wired, I've figured a tidy way to route the cabling so it doesn't look like a worm storm.

+1 I haven't found anything that makes any sense to other cyclists if I'm just passing - a "morning"/"evening"/"have a good ride" even confuses - I even started getting abuse from another lady who just assumed I was yelling at her - I managed to correct the misunderstanding when she caught me at the next light :) I just give them lots of room and stay way back if I can't safely pass - I know how nerve wracking these streets were to me at times before I grew the thicker skin.

Dan, I think I saw you or a stunt double on Carlton last night (heading east around... 9pm?) - I didn't react quickly enough to say Hi though.

Long-time reader, first-time posta in this thread:

quick question before I go out for a ride...is there any way to get to broadview & danforth via the don without having to grind up that hill at pottery road?

thanks!

I'm thinking daily disposables for occasional use, but welcome your collective advice on cycling + contact lenses.

I wear contacts. I have two week disposibles, and I wear them longer than that. Apparently they're all the same contacts (daily, monthly etc). Costco usually has the best deals, but I got mine at Hakim because they had a special on.

wear some eyewear, got a great pair of cheapie yellow cycling shades, no real tint, great for day and night and they keep the worst of it out of my eyes/ventilate really well

I live on carlton, hack around a lot at night, what was stunt double riding?

Oh man no idea, I was... let's say, not fully sober ;) And yeah, my speedo went nuts next to my buddies laptop last night, picked up like 74.9mph heh. It only pisses me off because it gives me false ODO readings, and it's mileage I'm trying to keep track of. MEC turtle lights on flash make it interesting too, I think Brad told me about that one a while ago though.

Re: Broadview/Danforth from the Don - only 2-3 ways I can think of, all involve some sort of hill climb - Pottery Road is an obvious one, the access road near the Police Dog training area is another - same kind of hill, goes to Broadview/O'Connor. I'm checking now, but I think there's a stairwell off Gerrard, if not, then you'd have to go down to the stairs at Queen and ride up. I think I'd prefer the hill grind - I've pulled my daughter up that hill in the trailer before - on an MTB with the middle chainring, though :p (couldn't change down to the granny gear at the time :( ;))

Flimflam 04-16-08 01:27 PM

Looking at the new city map (http://www.toronto.ca/parks/brochure...s_trails_1.pdf) it looks like there are at least walking paths into the Don from around Gerrard/Broadview area - I don't know what this one looks like on the ground though, I've never taken it - just remember one of those thin-looking pedestrian bridges.

Here's a google map to the area in question

freecycle 04-16-08 02:01 PM

wow the net is pissing me off like hell!

anyone in this city have a bern helmet? how the hell do i get my hands on one?? every site out there has a completely RANDOM selection, the closest ive come is the kayak version, what gives?!

clipin 04-16-08 02:01 PM

ff, I have two Cateye double wireless and it is great, except when the battery goes then you have to re-sync it with the main unit. I've ridden with groups and had no problem and in the computrainer group, where we're only two feet apart, still no problem with other computers or heart rate monitors. Pricy at $199 and that's if you can find one in the city. Seems Cateye is way behind in back orders for this unit.

iherald 04-16-08 02:45 PM

Does anyone have a single screw for a Time Cleat? One fell out of my shoe and now I'm stuck with two screws instead of the three I need.

Flimflam 04-16-08 02:47 PM

nice to know, clipin - though with a sticker shock of almost $200 I may as well look at the Garmin stuff. I might just suck it up and use the $15 wired MEC dealy for now - thanks for the suggestions.

Some how I skipped over all that Office Space stuff there, doh - one of my very favourite movies... Drunken Lumberg-inspired chatter is good times(tm) :D

Wasn't me. I was at home *****ing about how tired I was/going to sleep etc.

~Stuart~ 04-16-08 04:20 PM

anyone going to the ride thingy tonight?

i want to start getting into group rides (riding solo is getting boring), so, i guess im going to try and get out tonight, i'll be the one with the odd stem mounted light

kylehutton 04-16-08 04:30 PM

hahaha dont say "the one"

i've currently got a super bright flashlight taped to my stem.

pyze-guy 04-16-08 05:40 PM

Lots of answers today.

Freecycle, no you dont want that bike. Weighs about 35lbs, and when you try to turn better not peddle or you will drill your knee on the bars. And the push rod brakes are soooooo bad. For pure unique factor, it would rock.

Re: contacts. I need to get some more. I use daily wear and find they last about 4-5 days before they rip. I love riding with them.

For the Don in/out to avoid Pottery Rd, you can get on at the path just North of Gerrard above the Don Jail, or O'Conner between Broadview and Pape on Beechwood. It loops under the DVP and ends up along a paved trail. Not sure how to get to the mtb trails though.

Dan, I have an old 0 rise quill stem if you want.

Sad I'm done work, going to miss the commute now that I've been riding there the past 2 weeks. Feel so much better once I get to work, up early to spend time with Carson, sleep great and need less of it and hopefully getting me in shape so I don't keel over and die riding in the Don thisn year. Can't wait for the Tuesday DSR Singletrack rides.

Who sells 15t 3/32 cogs?
