Canon 20D, but the camera's the least important part of the equation. The off-camera flash helped a lot (courtesy of somnambulant) and I use a good lens (one of the "L" series Canon ones). I like my "night racing" shots to be a bit ****zy, but if you want sharp photos (like the one I took for the Cycle Solutions team of one of their riders) a decent flash is pretty much the only way to go.

PS. Wes/Keith/V.Y. ... there's a big-ass version of that photo of one of your riders on my Flickr page if he/the team ever wants it for anything.

PPS. This is the photo I always have in mind when I shoot night races. It's one of my favourites and I shamelessly (try to) emulate whenever the situation presents itself.

Would it be stupid of me to be in school full time, work part time and also do a remote internship with CX Magazine (helping out with production)? Seems like a fun opportunity but geez, spread, myself thinner why don't I?

Haha, I just borrowed it from him for the race. I wish I'd been out there with a few strobe heads and a proper lighting pack (or two). Hell, while I was at it I should have been shooting off the back of a quad, ala Euro CX races ..

As for TTL/manual: I shot both, depending on the situation.

If your setup is a standard (Shimano) road double with the recommended BB, your current chainline should be 43.5mm at the spider, 41mm for the inner ring, and 46mm for the outer ring (referenced from https://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html).

In this case, if your rear wheel is the "standard" 42mm chainline, you should be able to get away with using just the inner ring; if you want the outer ring (aesthetic reasons?), you'll need a BB with a shorter spindle and will need to make sure that your chainring isn't so big that it'll hit the chainstay.

Unfortunately, I use Nikon/CLS, so I don't think we can collaborate for a super-lighting system. And I thought you meant Wes was holding your off-camera flash.. i.e. he is the voice-activated light stand

BUt then it'll be 41mm in the front and 42mm in the back...?

in my experience, if the chainline is a mm or two off, it won't affect performance.

1mm is definitely fine

my old bad weather bike was something like 2-3 and it ran nice

a perfect chainline is nice because it's quiet and the components probably last slightly longer, but definitely doesn't seem to be a big deal

Hahaha, I can just picture him running along side the riders, flash unit in hand, "Keep up with the break, Wes!" *click*

Mike.....

your pics just get better and better...woot!
I've learned a valuable lesson in practicing all your cam mounts before you shoot something as most of my video is POV'd too high... s&*t f%^k and bother!!!

As for interning in production ...dude go for it, you might find something else you love to do, and it goes hand in hand with the web dev courses you are taking. It used to be that print and web folks were two different groups of people. With profit margins being so thin these days all hires now, unless in a money rich org, are indeed all skills at one workstation.

If you ever want to talk print production give me a shout.... it's what I've been doing for years.

I saw the news coverage of the CM on the Gardner, from the high CN cam I think, the sea of red lights behind the riders literally gave me such a charge. Put a lump in my throat it did. Hey if one guy wants to run the blockade, good for him.

I had a blast marshaling(sp) corner 1. I can do that again I think indeed. Who'd a thunk standing in one spot for several hours would have been such fun.

Not to go without mention .. exhibitx.. your shots kick butt and your vids from the Mezz level from Front/Scott rock! Such a good representation of the speed they are carrying. I can see my flag!

I just caught the girlfriend reading Giro updates off the effing Italian sports papers. That level of roadie scum-ness frightens me on a profound level.

It's true, that level of road racer is a very special kind of monster.

i say take the internship at the bike mag; maybe you can prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future:

nothing says "ride a bike" like a banana hammock...

Can't remember his name but he was a world class triathlon competitor. Seriously though are those races so close you can't peel the swim suit off and toss on some shorts.... please?

Yay. I wish the guy would have been specific about his issue, but whatever. At least it's not as bad as crazy misogynist dude who posted on craigslist last year. That was just odd. We had some weird letter in our mailbox as well about that. Overall it was nice to read some good feedback about the shop. We do actually try to help people out (surprise surprise, working at a bike shop isn't about a quick cash grab).

I found the mass again on Queen West and everyone who was left went to 40 College to find out who the one was who got arrested, he was ticketed and released they told us (after a lengthy intercom conversation). I went up the grass bank as well, it just seemed like the sensible route as a lot of us were in front of the main pack. As for the "protest" being for bike lanes on bloor.... eff that in the a, I hate the attachment/stigma it's brought about in that article.

That all being said, it was a bit silly - though fun.

Early bedtime for me... mmhmm.

Mechie question:

I have a 109mm Italian campy bb (cartridge, no offset) (thanks dan) that should jive with campy victory crank, but the 42 tooth ring hits the stay before it even gets close to snug. Wondering if anyone could suggest a 113mm bb that will be a good match for this crank or any other options. Thanks oxox kiss kiss.

edit: Does campy make a spindle of this length?
