Shouldn't be surprising, but its always a let down when you realize that most people just don't like taking responsibility for their actions. What the hell kind of person goes around with a set mentality of, "how can I get out of this one?"

Similar thing happened to a friend. A woman backed up her suv (hummer?) onto his car hood. With good faith he let her go (her kid was in the hospital or something) and when he called her, her husband denied anything (she wouldn't talk to my friend) and the insurance didn't pay because technically it was a rear-end on his part and thus at fault. Cowards.

In the past, whenever I was at the scene of an accident due to job-related stuff, I would always tell any of the people who were involved to get as much info as possible, regardless of how nice or not nice the person was being.

I recall vividly a cyclist getting knocked off by a cabbie and being rather shook up and getting the cabbie's cell-phone number----he didn't want to get the cops involved as it turned out she was not hurt but her bike was bent----I told her to call the number right now while the cabbie was still on the scene. Guess what? His cell phone didn't ring :(

since most ppl have cellphones these days, it woulda been cool if that biatch got her pic taken.. and when the info proved false, have her face plastered on flyers in that area about what a low-life she is.

Jeez. That's pretty damn low, man. I can understand being indifferent/wanting to get away from the situation, but seeming sympathetic only to give false info is a big scumbag move for sure. The tard will have a nice karma injection down the road somewhere.

Amazing how heavy an extra 15lbs felt in my rucksack yesterday after stocking up at the health store up north, made me feel *very* slow at points on the way back into the east end (this time I took 7 to Kennedy, the Steeles across to Victoria Park and south again - Kennedy had some unappealing hillocks to deal with). 220k over the weekend; feels good to get out there some more.

Yesterday was a beautiful day for riding though, I enjoyed a sandwich on some grass up there in the mild breeze - simply gorgeous. Today on the other hand is windy as heck, it coming from the lake in Toronto and it coming from the north when I get into Whitby. Bleh.

Any update on the Charlie ride?

Will do, I stocked up well yesterday but will ride there next weekend if you like. I'm thinking of doing the Mean Streets 200k Sunday (route is around Toronto) with the Ontario Randonneurs, maybe Saturday? I've no reason to go other than the ride, so I'm easy. And I rode it fixed both times this past weekend, so no probs there. PM me - weekends are my only time for rec. rides too really right now.

Mean Streets 200k.... now that sounds interesting! :-) Has anyone done it before?

I've not done the Mean Streets ride, but want to this year as a nice way to explore the parts of the city I rarely find myself in.

The ride:
The ride itself is a great tour of the city/ It heads down towards the lake, then west
towards the border with mississauga, up through the Woodbine grounds and across the top
of the city using various quiet streets and river valley bike paths. It hits the far north
east corner of Toronto before a smartly located control point at Reids Dairy in pickering.
Then its back into he city, a few more bike paths, a visit to bluffers park and a tour of
the Bridle Path. Expect a good 12-13 hours to complete.

There are many unmarked turns on the route (on the bike paths) so its best to trace it out on a map,
or via google maps. If I have time I will post a online map of the ride. I should also have a few Toronto
Bike maps with the route traced out. I don't expect anyone to get lost we usually stick
together as a group.

Just for the record and to play devils advocate. Obviously she is a d0uchebag for giving false info...but...it is the cab drivers responsibility to make sure the coast is clear before letting anyone get out of their cab. She isn't legally responsible...the driver is.

Really? So the driver would get the ticket for opening a door into traffic ... or there's a separate fine for allowing your fare to do something that injures someone else?

if you want to ride a 200 with the randonneurs i'd say do something other than the mean streets. you basically ride through the suburbs and unmarked park paths the whole time. for long rides, i'd rather get out into the country...just my $0.02...

The operator of the machine is it's GOD!!!! Ok so that was a bit thick, but the driver is responsible for the actions of everyone in the vehicle.

That's definitely what I think. The cop I spoke to disagreed but I definitely maintain that the guy had both the moral and legal responsibility to stay at the scene.

last summer my girlfriend had an incident where she was driving and dropping a friend off, who was sitting in the front seat, passenger side. her friend opened the door and was about to step out, when a car tried to squeeze around on the curb side (at a red light) and hit the open door.

legally it was found that my girlfriend was at fault for letting the door open when there was moving traffic, even though the car was passing illegally.

oh man, on my way from my backpacking trip we were driving the camp van. Anyways, while doing 110km/h in the middle lane of a reasonably busy highway 11, our rear tire exploded.



so the driver casually puts his other hand on the wheel, holds down the horn, and puts on the blinker, and moves over to the hard shoulder, then stops the van... meanwhile the rest of us were slightly freaked out due to the fact we had an 18 wheeler on one side, and we had about 15 full packs, 6 people and were sitting in a 50year old camp van... good times

the doorprizes really are stacking up eh? damn. If some clever ******* slams one in my face its coming right off... 35kmh X 180lbs + 21lbs + 8lbs ulock = dead door.

on a related note, im riding with a tensor on my left hand casually through traffic and some ***** guns it to try and make the right ahead of me. I havent come that close to pulling someone out a window in a long time.

I totally agree, but this ride is easy to get to and easy to get back from. Plus, it might be nice to see some of the city that I normally wouldn't.

Hopefully drivers will start paying a bit more attention to their surroundings next week with the kids back in school and an increased police presence.

Just got back from up north, empty handed. My Nagasawa hasn't arrived yet. Turns out they shipped last Tuesday only, by Greyhound. They (the bus people) have no clue where the package is, and won't initiate a trace until 14 days have elapsed. To top it off, Vancouver CL today has tales of theft from Greyhound Vancouver. All I can do is just wait for word of delivery. If it does arrive, I won't see it now until Thanksgiving, unless I blow $100 on gas for a special trip up there.

I disagree with that. The cabbie just made his stop, there are bikes everywhere and the coast is never really clear. It was the woman's responsibility to wait before exiting the vehicle.

the passenger trusts the driver of the motorized vehicle with their safety, even when exiting the vehicle. Same thing with kids on a schoolbus, i figure.
