I'm not surprised at all, considering how much bad driving we see on a daily basis. And you think privatization of licensing centers does this situation any good?

"In 2005, the Ontario auditor general issued a scathing report on gaps in the driver licensing system. Among other problems, gym membership cards were being used as identification to get licences, and people were showing up in the system with duplicate licences."
SERIOUSLY?!
"It hopes to introduce technology next year that would compare photos of new applicants to those in the system to keep suspended drivers from getting a second licence."
Can't they just, oh I don't know, use people's social insurance number or something? What a crazy thought!

I remember back in the day before they had the fancy driver's licences and they scanned your photo, you could borrow the birth certificate of an older student (in high school) and get yourself 'official' photo id from the government. Other than the name being wrong, it was your picture and totally official. I didn't do this, as the licenses changed a few years before I could, but I knew people who did.

It scares the **** out of me. The account of her running through an intersection in the left turn lane, bombing down a hill with a pedestrian at a crosswalk in plain sight, and then killing the dude ****ing terrifies me knowing she's still out there. I mean, the one thing you can't really avoid is some dumb**** just running you down from behind, and here she is, driving around on what might be your route home tonight.
Think it's possible that if we all direct our hate at her at exactly 8PM she'll get an embolism? Couldn't hurt to try...

Hey Steeker!
I've seen you at a few CM rides since life got in the way and you had to take a break from the forums, etc. Did that recumbent end up being a good solution for your back issues?

I read it and for whatever reason immediately went about tracking down her contact info/address (at which point I thought better of ****ing up my life over someone who's clearly a lost cause already). It gets tossed around too much but that woman sounds almost sociopathic in her behaviour. Her instinct after hitting and dragging a guy is to gun it wildly down the street?! That could have just as easily killed someone else. Absolutely no regard for human life. The fact that she didn't even serve a year pretty much proves that the system failed decent citizens completely.

I had left St Joe's Hospital years ago visiting a friend's dad, and we(the family) were sitting facing the red light in second place, on Jamison and Lakeshore, facing south. In front of us is a little Toyota something or other. The light turns green and the Toyota starts to advance. In the middle of the intersection it clips the back quarter of a honking Olds that had run the red on Lakeshore, despite the fact the other two lanes were filled with stopped cars. The toyo had a married couple in it, a 3yearold and an infant behind the driver. The lady in the olds , was in a borrowed car no insurance on suspended license. The father in the toyo(passenger) hurt his back and hadn't worked in the year+ it took to go to trial.
Had the toyo been a wee bit faster, it would have been smashed on the driver's side and that infant almost assuredly would have been killed if not mom too. I was out of the car/on 911/directly traffic etc, in a few seconds. The Olds driver was indeed concerned for the other ppl (to the point of tears) but at the end of the day she didn't appear in court, where it came out that this was not her first time doing this (though this was the first time she almost killed). Driving is a god given right you know, you can take the wheel from my cold dead hands. Makes me think cultures that remove the hands of thieves might be onto something.

Rough story re: that accident too, TJ... I really wish there were better/stricter standards out there on the roads - I'm not entirely convinced it's the MTO in full fault, people generally just seem to not care out there for anything other than their own agenda. We see it everyday, fortunately it's at much lesser extremes for the most part.
Another grim day in the news, too... Man it's a rough world out there sometimes. Bleh.

You can only suspend someone's license once, but if they insist on getting back behind the wheel over and over again, what can a just society do?

Bikes: too many too list
More than a year in jail? Ankle bracelet monitoring? 2 thumb pokes in both eyes? Stoning?
Seriously though...someone with her financial resources is not going to be spooked from driving by a fine..no matter how large. I really don't understand why, after so many blatant violations, she isn't given a jail sentence commensurate with her obvious disregard for the law. If I didn't have a job I would spend my time outside her house, with 911 on speed dial, waiting for her to get in her car.
For the folks interested in CETMA stuff. We have em in a box in the store, but due to the stocking guys being in Montreal for the bike show, they havn't hit the floor yet. We have 3, 5 and 7 rail models w/ fences. Price is $80-$200 depending on configuration.

so i'm outside of my favorite italian sandwich place on clinton waiting for my dinner when i notice this black urbanite:

If you look closely you'll notice a key attached to one of the spokes near the cog. I couldn't resist trying it out and yes, it unlocked the bike. how stupid are people?! there was another lock on the bike though. too bad it looked like it came from the dollar store (i bet any one of us could pry it open with our bare hands)and it was attached to a 1/8" steel cable you could have cut with a pair of scissors.
