On a un-related to fixie note....I am going up to Albion Hills tomorrow afternoon for a pre-ride of the O-Cup Mountain bike race course. I know it's blasphemous to post about mtn bikes here but if anyone wants to tag along we have room for 2.

TRaffic Jammer 05-09-06 09:34 AM

cool.

Helmet cams, I saw some on TV, bike police have em somewhere. They were tiny too, fit in the venting.

Another cyclist was hit and killed last night, from a driver making a left turn.

I just saw a quick blurb about it on cp24, but I can't find any detailed articles on the web yet.

These drivers are getting out of hand, it's ridiculous.

I saw a review of a helmet cam made by Samsung that was made specifically for sporting use. it looked ULTRA SWEET!

I was wondering about that. Last night just before I went to sleep I turned on CP24 for a few seconds to check the forecast and I saw the word "cyclist" out of the corner of my eye in the news ticker... But I didn't feel like waiting for it to repeat. I was afraid of that. Cripes.

My friend saw that accident happen in person while she was riding on the bus.

Also, Keith, what size is that pink bike? brand, components etc?

TRaffic Jammer 05-09-06 09:46 AM

so that's 4? son of a ......
This ******* HAD to squeeze me as opposed to the streetcar, his Avalon was new you see.
To make matters worse all he had to do was wait a few flippin' seconds for either me to accelerate past the streetcar or the other way round, 10 seconds tops.. I can't remember having a car that close at speed in a loooong time, scared the **** out of me. He made several tries at nosing his way through, total ****.

Time to get the police and the press involved. This is going waaaay beyond the 'God damned bikers' mindset that I'm so used to.
What are those window clicker thingies called?

Shiznaz 05-09-06 09:48 AM

its because people are IN A HURRY!

STEEKER 05-09-06 09:51 AM

the Cops and the City will not do a F**king thing about it OH sureee they say a great deal when one of us gets killed but they do pee all about it that's a fact

Well they are looking for witnesess to the accident . did she see who was at fault ???

TRaffic Jammer 05-09-06 09:58 AM

now if only a cyclist could accidently kill a motorist........

At this point I don't think it matters anymore, if it's our legal right to take the lane and drivers' don't know that.
Then the police and the city should be culpable for not making it clear.

Shiznaz 05-09-06 09:58 AM

She said she pretty much just saw people running over to the guy, blood trickling from his mouth and a huge pool of blood behind his head

STEEKER 05-09-06 10:00 AM

contact( Email ) city hall and ask the Mayor about cracking down on the drivers in the city and see what they send you back you'll be surprised I know I was

somnambulant 05-09-06 10:01 AM

I'm starting to be tempted to start rocking a full-face helmet like Traffic Jammer! Or at the very least one of the Pro-Tec style helmets with more coverage. Does anybody know if they actually provide more protection? Or is it more of a psychological thing because they just seem sturdier?

damn right.

Pro-tec skate helmets offer pretty good bang your head on the ground protection, I don;t know about off a bike though, I have seen riders in Pro-TEcs

I use a Pro-tec during the winter and it has full corverage in the back and the are Spec'ed out for riot control headware in the states

Shiznaz 05-09-06 10:03 AM

They are designed to stop you from whacking trees and branches into your face, but they also work (to a lesser extent) to stop you from whacking cars or road into your face.

It SHOULD take a glancing blow from a light pole or mailbox as well, as long as your getting your head turned. Better the lid than your face.

somnambulant 05-09-06 10:08 AM

re protec: I wonder what affords the most protection in a car vs. cyclist collision though. I mean, cycling helmets are obviously designed to cushion an impact and totally deform (ie. crush). but, they have less coverage. This is opposed to a "hard" helmet which is designed to withstand multiple impacts and not deform, but has considerably more coverage. Do you know what I mean?

Personally, when I look at my helmet I wonder what help it would be in a collision with the car, unless the car hit me directly on top of the noggin. I guess it protects the "important parts"... but wouldn't you think they're designed more for a cyclist taking a spill by themselves vs. colliding with a car?

Ugh. I'm just getting paranoid now.

TRaffic Jammer 05-09-06 10:10 AM

I think the skate (vert) helmet would give you more, and it's made for repetitive bongos.
I'm going to see if I can call in press contact.

SomeHOW, the bikers HAVE to take that damned lane. It's the only way I can see. The drivers, I can't blame 100%, if they think they are entitled I can see why they would be freaking. I know ignorance is no excuse, but they must be away.

ok type out a letter about why the city and the police are doing nothing to stop the bad drivers in the city that kill ped and cyclists and drivers that don't stop for stop signs or cross walks even lights make sure you include the above and mention that the drivers also go past street car doors when peeps are getting on/off and the fines for the drivers and drunk drivers are nothing but little slaps on the wrist. I did this and was surprised with responce , just copy /paste the addy'd below on one letter and wait.. mailto:mayor_miller@toronto.ca, councillor_ainslie@toronto.ca, councillor_altobello@toronto.ca, councillor_ashton@toronto.ca, councillor_augimeri@toronto.ca, sbussin@toronto.ca, councillor_carroll@toronto.ca, councillor_cho@toronto.ca, councillor_cowbourne@toronto.ca, councillor_davis@toronto.ca, councillor_debaeremaeker@toronto.ca, councillor_delgrande@toronto.ca, councillor_digiorgio@toronto.ca, councillor_feldman@toronto.ca, councillor_filion@toronto.ca, councillor_fletcher@toronto.ca, councillor_ford@toronto.ca, councillor_giambrone@toronto.ca, councillor_grimes@toronto.ca, councillor_hall@toronto.ca, councillor_holyday@toronto.ca, councillor_jenkins@toronto.ca, councillor_kelly@toronto.ca, councillor_lipreti@toronto.ca, councillor_lindsay_luby@toronto.ca, councillor_mammoliti@toronto.ca, councillor_mcconnell@toronto.ca, councillor_mihevc@toronto.ca, councillor_milczyn@toronto.ca, councillor_minnan-wong@toronto.ca, councillor_moscoe@toronto.ca, councillor_nunziata@toronto.ca, councillor_ootes@toronto.ca, councillor_palacio@toronto.ca, councillor_pantalone@toronto.ca, councillor_pitfield@toronto.ca, councillor_rae@toronto.ca, councillor_saundercook@toronto.ca, councillor_shiner@toronto.ca, councillor_silva@toronto.ca, councillor_soknacki@toronto.ca, councillor_stintz@toronto.ca, councillor_thompson@toronto.ca, councillor_walker@toronto.ca, councillor_watson@toronto.ca
