Snow/Salt Free Winter Ftw!!!

Shiznaz 01-08-07 10:33 AM

what are you talking about salt free? My bike is totally caked with salt and I see them piling the roads with it every day!

edit: CL WATCH

bianchi with chrome lugs and chainstays, hot pink fade job, aero lever and original cables, 100 bucks. Sounds like a deal to me

This makes me feel guitly for wanting to sell my Bianchi frame for more than double.

Anyone in fixie land have a new or used Surly Tuggnut they want to have leave from? I need one pronto for my Single Speed MTB, but it will be forever before we will order one at my store.

On that note, does anyone else know of a chain tugg that will work with QR or solid axles like the surly one will? I just need something.

*edit* My rear wheel keep slipping because I can't get the Skewer to tighten enough. I broke one already.

Shiznaz 01-08-07 11:09 AM

You guys seriously need to make a parts order! Its been months! You've lost so many purchases from me in the mean time...

Does anyone know if Sam from Under the Weather is around?

I've emailed him twice regarding wanting to purchase a product, but no one has responded...

So, does anyone have some recommendations for a budget fixed wheel? I'm still working on my old Miele which is SS now but I want fixed. What I'd really like is Open Pro/Phil Wood... but unless I win the lottery that's not going to happen. I'm thinking maybe a Surly hub and some good but fairly priced hoops, but what other options should I consider?

I just bought the surly flip flip hub for my mtb. Been using it for about a month. Fantastic so far. Had it built to an Alex disc rim for a really good price at cycle Therapy.

We are currently receiving booking over the next week or so, which is probably over 40% of the years P&E. It's the stuff we can only get from US distributors, like the tuggnut, surly hubs, and other cool stuff that we can't order without having a minimum order. It's a drag, but that's the story this time of year for small independent shops with small buying power.

He's posted a couple of times in the forums recently.

Can you guys order in tubus racks? I think they are distributed by Ortleib USA

It's always sort of blown me away that there isn't a consolidated buying group for bicycle shops here. Some outdoor retailers formed the Oasis group which allows larger economy of scale purchases and custom ordering. Maybe too competitive a marketplace...

How recently? I emailed him like last week...

Probably. If it's with the rest of the Ortleib stuff, we would get it from NRG I believe. Problem is (even though they are a domestic distributer) the minimum order comes into play. I think we can get Surly stuff from them too. Maybe I'll have better luck with that than QBP.

*edit* I'm in class right now. Bike forums is going to make me fail out of school.

I'll make you a shirt that says,

Ideas for an ultra cheap fixed wheel.

1. Suicide hub (no lockring freewheel hub)
2. Re-space / Redish
3. Locktite threads and cog
4. Rotofix

Muhahahha!
That's what my sister is getting.
Don't worry. she'll get a brake too.

Otherwise a Formula, Surly or Miche hub will do the trick.
They all cost about $75-90 for the hub.

As for rims... there are a bazillion to choose from.

For real though? spend the money now and buy something nice cause you'll want to upgrade in 3 months time.

Offhoff 01-08-07 12:04 PM

I'd love to know where your finding Miche hubs for 75-90...

And for all the safety meeting folk out there THIS is how you have a safety meeting, in the back of the van going back up the hill.

Righteous.

Or buy a set of Phil's, and then spend the next 3 months saving up for the rims and spokes :D

Yeah, I hear that... but I think if I don't set a budget then I'll never finish the bike. Originally I wanted a fancy set of new cranks, but just ended up going with what I had to save money. Perhaps I should go the Phil/OP route though if I can swing the cash- The hubs would be worth more than I paid for the bike but they are transferrable to a new frame I suppose.

I_bRAD 01-08-07 12:27 PM

Nice wind today... it's like riding into a wall heading west!

Sirrobinofcoxly 01-08-07 12:32 PM

It's worth getting the good stuff. You hear all the time about people who ride a lot getting an "affordable hub-set", and they pooch out. Sure they last a year or two, but in the long run, you end up spending more buying some new hubs, and having it rebuilt every couple of years than getting one solid set to start. Get some nice gear, and keep it for years.

He was asking about rear hubs, not a pair.

Exactly.

I started out being semi cheap going to a sealed Quando hub.
Spent $75 on the hub and in two months time stripped it learning how to skid.

Then I ended up spending $90 more to replace it with a Miche.
So far it's been good to me.
$15 more goes a long way in terms of quality.

SEALED CARTRIDGE BEARINGS ARE YOUR FRIEND.
Deep threads and quality lockrings also enjoy play time.

Ah thanks for the clarification Lymb, I must say that the Miche hubs have been fantastic since I got mine. The only annoying feature is the fact that they are single sided so no gearing switches in the middle of rides.

Other then that they've been totally rock solid for me.

I'm actually very satisfied with the single sidedness.
One finds the perfect gear and sticks with it.

Having to loosen, flip and retighten is sort of annoying.
I'd go so far as to say silly because most of the time I ride directional patterned tires.

Fixed / fixed WTF?
Fixed / null FTW

I have a Phil flip-flop, double fixed, and I have never had another cog on the other side. If I ever bought another set of hubs, I would still get that as an option though. It's nice knowing it's there.

What ever happened to the "NJS" tshirt idea!?!?!?!? get on that!

Offhoff 01-08-07 01:33 PM

I mostly want a double sided so I could put a freewheel on the otherside for descending. When I'm coming south from like Avenue and Wilson it would be nice to enjoy those rollers a little more then I do right now with the consta-spin.
