Locker's may not be pretty but if gets more people on the road, I say yay to that. Is that guy with the fixie wearing a suit?!!!

And re: the United Way, keep in mind that the fraud issues are for US based UW's. Not that there isn't an abuse potential in Canada, but none on record yet that I'm aware of.

Try climbing this. during the pilgram season. Ugh. Over 4800 steps. Been there and don't have to do it again.

He has a mall named after him in Dubai themed after all the places he explored.

In regards to the actual climb, its as hard as you want to make it, assuming you can squeeze by the slow people. I did it in 15 mins 26 seconds and I was definitely ready to collapse jelly legs lungs afire at the top. Walking would be easy, but its about how much you put in. and yeah you get dizzy and lightheaded. I don't think theres enough O2 in that shaft for all the climbers!

agreed. all those folks bedecked in runners gear are probably in fact runners doing it to see how fast they could go. kind of like the fast group you see at the ride for heart; it attracts all kinds.

as for the diffuculty, i think i made it up in something like 14mins (wearing cycling shoes) and i was fatigued at the end soaked in sweat. it took probably 4 times as long to get down once you wait for the elevator.

can't comment on the legitimacy of the United way as a charity; i did it for the novelty and didn't raise any money.

jeremywhitehorn 01-17-07 03:36 PM

i don't know if i love or hate those bike lockers yet.

Okay.. which one of your tall mofo's wanted the bottecchia again?

It's a 60cm frame.

I want to make this thing fair... so skill testing question comes to mind.

What theading does an Italian BB use?.
What is the width of an Italian BB?
What's your favorite Italian dish?

First one to come up with the correct/most amusing answers can have the frame.

A) The threading that matches the bottom bracket shell on an Italian frame
B) The same width as the BB shell
C) Your Mom

:D

Just kidding. I'm nowhere near that tall (plus after that comment I'm probably already out of the running for the frame!)

Shiznaz 01-17-07 04:02 PM

mama mia!

somnambulant 01-17-07 04:22 PM

holy shiznit.. these guys are going slightly faster than we were on the track:

Well, in Track 3 we could go pretty well as fast as we could... But there's no way I could keep my line going that fast into the turns. Going as fast as I wanted to I was still getting thrown upwards about 3' when I would first enter the turn. You really have to throw your weight into the turns I found. Although instead I just sprinted out of the turns and down the straight and just let up and speed checked going into them.. :P

Shiznaz 01-17-07 04:40 PM

We would have ended up as part of the guy's collection of cautionary anecdotes. Track parables if you will. Boy did he have a ton of those!

If this is open to those who have yet to do one of the fixed rides I keep hearing about (and assuming that it's not already taken)

1) right hand thread on both sides, which always screws me up. I barely remember the 'normal' way, and now they mess me up.

2) 7cm (just to mess with people's minds!)

3) I don't know if this is Italian, but I have Italian roommates and I have grown to love Rapini. But, it has to be done right. A little garlic..hmmm. I could make a joke about this girl I dated from Woodbridge, but she was half German...so it doesn't really count.

Apparently I'm #5 on the list for the City Hall lockers. It would be useful, even if I don't use it that often. For $10 it would be a nice place to park a bike.

Shiznaz 01-17-07 05:14 PM

If I was homeless I would probably pay 10 dollars to live in one of these. Place to leave your stuff, secure at night, probably easy to heat.

I wonder when the first person will get locked in one?

PS. they are a bit of an eyesore. They could be been more creative with the design and clad them in fine anthracite marble.

I_bRAD 01-17-07 05:20 PM

I was thinking the same thing- 10 bucks, waterproof (?) and right at the subway for easy transportation/panhandling turf.

They've had them in Detroit for some time... wonder how they're working out there?

.

I was wondering the same thing :D Lymb, I'll pass on the Bottechia. I should probably do something with the four or so frames I have before acquiring more...

And watching that video, I'd definitely be an anecdote. I way too unco-ordinated to ride at speed on a track with other people :(

I'm not sure if you could actually live inside one.. it's not a square like the outside of the locker looks.
It's more like a triangle. Each box is divided into halves diagonally. The floor is concrete and really cold.

It looks super fast.
What are those people doing cruising around the outside? Are they part of the teams too?
I had no idea that one could go that fast.
The video of you guys doing track 1 was like super lame-O in comparison.

Danhalen 01-17-07 06:57 PM

Holy schnitzel that is fast! I'm off to Mt. Tremblant for the weekend. Later sk8rs

Yeah. Our laps around the track = super slo-mo with tivo. GG.

I'll take a shot:
A)I have an Italian BB here on my desk, believe it or not, and it says 36X24F on it. I think that is the type of threading but most people just call it reverse threading ie: you have to use blue loctite on it. My Ciocc originally came with a BB that had been put on with red loctite and damn, that sucker was hard to take off.
B)It also says 70Nm on it. I guess this is Italian for 70cm ;)
C)I made this yesterday----gnochhi with pesto and hot Italian sausage. Damn, it is good but I don't recall the Italian name for it, maybe it is Gnocci Arabiata? I basically just cut up a lot of garlic and onion and add some store-bought pesto to a couple of sausages sliced up and then throw it all on top of some gnocchi. It is a simple and light dish, really good comfort food, y'know?

Were you able to get the seatpost out? Is it really a 60cm frame? I ride a 60 right now and it looks smaller than that, weird.

Arrabiatta means angry hot, or angry spicy. Made with tomato sauce. Pesto and sausage is excellent.

i rented one of these out at bloor and spadina. i'm living in richmond hill, and if i didn't have it, i would never have ridden at all. it's a great program to encourage people to commute whole or part of the way. only detriment is that when the weather gets wet AND cold, the lock freezes. that, and i lost my key (with a $90 replacement), but that was my fault. when i finally got someone to open it up for me a week later, my scarf/spare clothes inside were mildewy-smelling.

life savers. two thumbs up. never any threat of bike theft or sketchiness.

Okay, I will henceforth dub my dish Gnocchi a la Bottocchia :)

Coolio, good to know that they are being used for their intended purpose.
