It's Columbus something. The tubing label is almost completely destroyed so I'm not sure. The tubing label is black around the edges if that means anything.

Its been like over a year and I've wasted hours and hours looking for him on CL, ebay, bike shops, bike shows etc. He's spent thousands and thousands of dollars on pot over the past few years too so its not like he is broke. He said he wants to spend 500 dollars and get a good bike, but I can't find a good bike for 500 dollars really. I found a bunch of great ones for 650 but they are too expensive for him. If he would just smoke one less ounce I'd put him on a sweet ride but he doesn't understand value and how cheap bikes are waste of money. Oh well, he's fat and lazy and only getting fatter and lazier. Try to do someone a favour and they just **** all over you. /rant

Has anyone ever bought an old bike / fixed up one (literally or not) for a significant other? I'm starting to think of my girlfriend's birthday in July. It would be nice to get her an old road bike that she could ride around and we could go for rides with.

That said, she's a runner and the bike wouldn't get used much. So I'd like to keep it cheap. Has anyone done something like this? I wouldn't necessarily want her to buy me a bike, since I know what I like. But I think she'd enjoy having a decent bike.

I built up a nice Pinarello Asolo fixed gear for my ex girlfriend before she dumped me! Luckily she paid for most of it; I just donated some parts and put it together. I doubt I'd do it again really... Its more fun to ride with guys who like to go fast. Maybe fix up an old cruiser for the boardwalk but theres not much point in putting something really nice together if you're just going to potter along.

gokiburi 03-05-07 03:57 PM

check out parts unknown in kensington? if it's not a surprise, you could bring her down for test rides. err...or surprise her with something if you know her size.

One of the perils of building a bike for your girlfriend (haha):

I just saw that. It made me laugh. Fancy bar tape is not likely to happen. I'm just aiming for true wheels!

it's a bike shop/garage/pile/stash/heap at 216 augusta avenue in kensington market. it's kinda hard to find. look for jumbo empanada (across from the large crappy supermarket). go down the laneway beside jumbo and you'll see a vine encrusted shack with "lots" of bikes inside.

There may be a big white picket fence blocking the alleyway, and if not, the road leading down to the shack is basically unrideable, especially in winter. George is an interesting character as well. If he is not there, bang on the green door that goes upstairs on the left as you're heading towards the shack. Thats where he lives.

you should email him about the perils of building a bike for the gf.
that'd be good tape for the croatian national team.

Perhaps even more so. But your bicycle experience in Toronto is not complete without hitting your head on something in Georges garage, and even more importantly Igor's stash. Its really amazing going in to Igor's stash. Like, you simply cannot prepare yourself for the visual spectacle... its something else.

no meng, it's totally on the up and up. seriously. a bunch of people from here have bought stuff from there. just describe what you're looking for and watch him go spelunking for bikes. totally a non-igor vibe. speaking of which, did that guy drop dead or what. did his tunnel cave in?

He is not like Igor, but his shop is pretty much like Igors. Imagine a dank room. Now imagine that dank room filled with bicycles by a tetris master. Every possible cubic inch of air that could contain bicycle, does contain bicycle.

George is a great guy, Igor is a crooked a**hole. It is obvious neither of them are interior decorators.

tovi 03-05-07 05:28 PM

No, he doesn't buy stolen part, or so says his reputation. I've found some parts there for super cheap.

On another note, has anyone seen this magazine called 'Roleur'? It's about cycling culture, but is biased towards the old cycling legends and their style (image as well as riding) such as Merckx, de Vlamink, Maartens, etc. Check it out and read some articles: http://www.rapha.cc/index.php?page=94
I found some copies at LaBicicletta. They did a funny feature comparing Campy to Shimano, but it was just a bunch of stylish pictures from each brand, and then a list of analogies to both, such as Alpha Romeo vs. BMW, Mac vs. IBM, strawberry vs. apples, etc.

i bought a cruiser from george years ago.

it was like, 80 bux, with a "lock". he was really nice and helpful, though i don't know anything about his reputation. it was a nice bike until the brakes dislodged as i was riding through an intersection. after i pulled a fred flintstone, i "locked" it up and left it there for a while, so it got stolen/taken.

had i only known then what i know now, i'd still have a sweet little brown vintage raleigh 3 speed. doh! in fact, if i found one for cheap again, i'd likely have Ms. Visa get it for me.
