Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You created more questions: lol:

• Why from a Raleigh Sports and not any ol' bike?
• Just a 3 speed? Why not a 7 or even 10?

Handsome looking bike. Was that a rental? Looks to be at least a 60 or 61.

Last time I was in Phoenix I couldn't find anything to rent but hybrids. I hate straight bars, I'd likely rather be on a tricycle.

...who starts the Sturmy Archer versus Rohloff, versus Sram, versus Nexus IGH thread here in road ? It will reauire keeping a straight face and an absolutely serious delivery, so I'm out.

I think it ought to include speculation on use with discs, and at a minimum, tubeless tyre options for the custom wheel build. Also, weight penalties ought to be covered.

40° rear hub laced to 28° rim leaves 6 holes to bolt a custom rotor to.

SA 3 speed w/ disc is easy as pie.

It's downstate for true upstaters, but upstate for New York City folk. LOL

It's actually considered midstate by many.

Many NYC folk consider it upstate once the scenery composition turns at least to a 75/25 greenery-to-concrete ratio. Many consider White Plains to be upstate.

Also, electronic shifting is a must.

Gorgeous weather for today's midweek club ride. We had 18 or 19 riders, almost too many. If the group keeps growing, we will have to split into two.

Oh, I almost forgot...

THE END IS NEAR!

My wife told me we were riding the tandem today, so we did a 35.5 mile round trip to lunch. Had a tenderloin a good 10" across - no pics, though.

Averaged 16.7 mph which isn't too bad for not having our tandem legs.

F-ing autocorrect. It's done that to me before. My dictionary doesn't like pics but is fine with pis.

It could have been pies, you know.

How are tandem legs different from regular legs?

Don't know if you're serious or not, this being the addiction thread and all, but the position on a tandem is different enough that different areas or portions of the leg muscles are being used. A tandem also is also sort of feels like riding a trainer or it does to me.

Recumbents are different, too. It takes 500-1,000 miles for the muscles to adapt to the different pedaling position. Tandems don't require that much adaptation for the muscles, but there is some.

Nope, not a rental, I shipped my Shogun out there to ride when I go visit my daughter.
For $53.00 you can't beat it, and that way you know what you have, just gonna keep it there.
Being 6'2", I need the 59 cm frame to be comfortable, that bike fits like a glove,
52/40 double Bio-Pace with a 14/28 six speed freewheel, comfy steel, and a San Marco saddle.

I often get leg pain on the tandem that I don't get on my other bikes. Not sure about a radically different riding position - I always thought it might have something to do with adapting to the stoker's slower cadence.

Even though it means I will have to eat a lot more, I can foresee I will eventually be driven to commuting by bike. I'm sick and tired of rush hour and other motorists determining how fast I get to drive and I'm usually in a right pique by the time I arrive. I have flat out told my co-workers that if someday I don't show up but I haven't called in, it's because I've had an aneurysm or said screw it and am splitting on the exit for Seattle.
