Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BTW, I'm pretty sure that Sheldon Brown wrote a piece on why not to swap used tires back and forth.
He wrote a piece on why not to periodically rotate tires to even out wear like on a car.

The general recommendation is that when the rear tire wears down, move the front to the back and put a new tire on the front. The thinking is that most of your stopping power comes from the front so that's where you want the best rubber.

The word through the neighborhood grapevine is that the kids that sideswiped and/or rear-ended three parked cars outside my window yesterday were just a wee bit high, as I'd suspected. Evidently the geniuses, having just been let off the hook by the police officer, walked all of a half a block away and re-upped their high. As a local business was closing, they came out to find the two gents doing a bit of heroin. Cops were called and the kids were arrested; I guess that the kids couldn't pass the daunting follow-the-pencil test the second time around.

You may remember my posting about an illness that is keeping me from riding. Well the expected (from past experience) full-blown syndrome developed, and it has been a doozy. Into its fourth week now, and I am only just starting to believe I am over the hump. To review, this thing starts with night sweats, then morphs into an apparent case of acute bacterial prostatitis with pelvic pain, frequent and painful urination, chills and fever that seems to respond rapidly to antibiotic therapy. All's well for a couple of days, then it's obvious the febrile symptoms aren't going away. The prostate symptoms go away, but are replaced by both muscle and joint pain particularly in the calves and knees. And a tender and painful scalp and occasional headache. All episodic with one to three days between "attacks" and just extreme fatigue, agiration, and malaise in between. Everything is worse after about 4 PM every day. It also becomes obvious from urine testing that there is no sign of bacterial invovement. Almost four weeks into this thing and extensive blood work including cultures shows everything "normal". No mononucleosis. No malaria. My internist says it is most likely just a "viral syndrome" and suggests waiting a while before starting "body imaging" to learn more. Somebody else must have experienced this before me. Can it really have no name?

The various pains are at about 1/3 of max. intensity now, and I haven't had chills in a couple of days. The sweats continue. Mrs. rpen is getting a little testy about me going through three sets of night clothes every night, and I can't blame her. But at least things are looking up a little. Going on four weeks with no exercise. Worst thing is we are in Napa tasting wine for three days before heading to Lake Tahoe for a month. I'm just trying to keep up.

One funny thing though that makes me question my choice of physicians: after I asked him about the test results and complained of being miserable with pain, he recommended I take one, regular-strength acetaminophen every 4-6 hours. WUT? This disease laughs off 4 ibuprofens, 2 naproxens, or even 2 Tramadols. One acetaminophen is a joke. I'm beginning to think he is trying to ditch me because I'm on Medicare. Maybe the illness has just affected my reasoning...but still, one acetaminophen!

If anyone has ever heard of such an illness, by all means let me know about it.

So not a fan of cold or snow and I'm not sure I'd ever have the nerve to ride in the conditions she does, but her custom built bike is adorable and I definitely agree with the sentiment that we all need to take some time for ourselves. There is a brief glimpse- mostly silhouette- of her naked butt. You can read more about the bike build here.

....I honestly cannot believe you guys are still arguing over tyres. That is sooooo last month.

In other news, here are some amusing California state fair photos, including the first national drone racing championships, which ran today and yesterday.

...as usual, healthful, wholesome food was available in abundance.

...drone racing. Actually more boring as a spectator sport than bike road racing, if you can believe it.

...the 7th race at the horse track. Fillies only, 8 fulongs. I to watch these horses run, even though I feel badly for their treatment in many instances.

...sorry about this. I had my own adventure with mysterious, undiagnosable illness that went for about 4 and a half years, so I'm familiar noot with your illness, but with the physician behavior you describe. I don't know your guy, or your insurance, but some of them remunerate a certain chunk of moneys based on keeping your patients healthy, so if you appear to be headed in a direction that's going to require a lot of expensive tests ( that will often reveal nothing, so you will still be unhappy), there is some incentive to get you to leave.

I have yet to be sick under the new ACA stuff, or in fact since I hit the age for Medicare. So I'm not certain this is still happening. Your best revenge is to get and stay healthy. I know that the best medical advice I ever got was to stay away from doctors.

Back from a 3.5 mile run. Does not sound like much but it's the longest I've done in several months. I would rather ride with my club but work and then family obligations prevent that.

I don't rotate my running shoes.

I do understand your point and am perfectly happy to give up my opinion. All I ask is for a substitute one-word term for "discard rear, move front to rear, install new on frontt". Until such time I will, like some other practical folks I know, call it rotating. If you're old enough, you may remember that this same hubbub occurred when radial tires were introduced for autos and true rotation was replaced by front to back on each side and ignore the spare. Same word, different meaning is all.

There was a group of about 10, the men in front did not, but the women in back did.

Does that mean something??
