i get wanting to hang onto anything that is made well

but its not like every kitchen in europe has the same exact layout, surely the new kitchen would look haphazardly put together?

What I find hilarious about House Hunters is that in one house, everything is always "amazing" and they say it every time they walk into a new room. I dig the International one though, just because it's cool to see how people live in other countries and whatnot. Island Hunters is also interesting; here's a multi million dollar island with a $45 dollar shack on it.

Right now my favorite shows on tv are Fargo and Nathan For You, and I watch Walking Dead just because I like zombies, but the show is kind of dragging a bit this season.

I love how everybody on House Hunters seems to need so much room for all the entertaining they do. "This kitchen is way too small to hold buffets in" or "Gosh. We couldn't have anyone we know including our children using the same sink let alone waiting for the bathroom." I'm sorry, but we had five people living in a house with one bathroom when I was growing up and it was sometimes necessary to brush your teeth while someone else was taking a shower/bath. That's why they invented curtains.

I think you are missing the point. The OLD kitchen looked haphazardly put together. New, old, it doesn't matter. It isn't a built-in look.

Mumonkan 11-09-15 06:31 PM

so then the kitchen is essentially an afterthought in europe?

maybe thats why america is so fat. kitchens are a huge deal here

I'd love to get into wood-working but I probably need to eliminate a hobby first. Hard to let go of one though: bikes, cycling (totally different hobby than bikes), cars, photography, random new project ideas not involving wood.

While all that is true, it is not what is going on in Europe WRT kitchen cabinetry. It is simply not a built-in situation. Neither is it likely to be artisanal. It is just like any other furniture in the house. They buy a few cabinets to store what needs to be stored in the kitchen. Since what needs to be stored is the same in the next flat as in the previous one, the same cabinets will do the same job in the next place.

Not at all. The kitchen is extremely important. France didn't get its reputation for cuisine for no reason. Neither did it get that reputation due to the way its kitchens are furnished. It is simply about Spartan. A few things to store. A few cabinets to store them in. They aren't attached to the walls anymore than a book case must needs be built in elsewhere in the house.

Two sentences that set me off immediately were "My weight was also through the roof! I was 30lbs overweight!" Seriously?! WTF, man?! What kind of body dysmorphic world does this guy live in? Would I be happy if I were thirty pounds overweight or if LoP was? No, but I had gestational diabetes and have other family history so it's not just for aesthetic reasons or cuz I'd have to help pedal both of us up hills. That being said, did this poster pause for even a moment to consider how some of the Clydes and Athenas who started out riding or are now riding their bikes weighing 100 pounds more than their doctor would advise would feel reading his assessment? "Geez. If this guy's weight was through the roof at thirty pounds over, what does that make me?" What an inconsiderate jackass!

Of course, we could tell that right off by the way he pushed to the front of the pack thus forcing the better riders to reroute around his nearly lifeless form should he collapse from his attempt to power through on adrenaline instead of air. I'm just sorry he didn't throw up when he wanted to.

I think we all are.

Wait. Are you saying that a TV industry award can be described as prestigious?

I suppose I have to admit that Modern Family is every bit as good as Survivor: Botswanaland.

Never seen that either.

i was never a big "lets go to france" guy till this show. i saw a couple looking for a house in a small quiet villiage and now going to nowheresfille france is on my bucket list

it was like an old cartoon, you open your kitchen window on the second floor and youre overlooking a 6 foot wide "street" and you could shake hands with your neighbor on the other side

very strangely though, the french take their cabinetry with them when they move, its like furniture. i dont understand that concept at all

One mini-series that we're watching right now is on PBS: I'll Have What Phil's Having. It's only 6 episodes, but Phil (a sitcom writer ["Everybody Loves Raymond"], so he's pretty amusing), spends a week/episode in each county eating a variety of stuff. Shows like this really ignite my desire to travel more.

My experience of European kitchens which was, admittedly, limited to two in Germany many years ago, is that there is not available storage for lots of processed and packaged foods or even produce because you go to the store every day or every few days to buy what you need fresh. There were also no giant refrigerators because only the people shopping in the PX or commissary were buying gallons of ice cream or milk or boxes of cereal the size of an infant.

Yes. I agree with all that but was just too lazy to say it all.

Moving sucks bad enough without having to schlep cabinets all over hell and back.

So close, but not there yet.

In fact, it now seems to have run out of gas. Maybe it's time to put it out of it's misery. :innocent:

If you need to push the pedals that hard to get to the start and the front of a charity ride kind of childish, it's not a race.

...there's a pristine Santana tandem in the window of City Bikes here, (blue, shiny, clean as a whistle) with TA cranks and Suntour shifting that is marked $800, but when I asked about it the kid said they were at the "taking offers" stage (the rains have started here.) 58 c-c in front and about 55-56 c-c in back. It;s a darn good thing my garage is full. :o #gorgeous
