....the promoters will make more money from the rematch than they made on the fight itself. I'm not a big fan of MMA, too brutal and dangerous for the fighters. It's all the rage here, though. I watched Rhonda (the arm bar assassin) in the 2008 Olympics, and if you watch some of that footage, she was a thing of beauty and a force of nature. She dominated one or two women who had substantial height and reach advantage in her various elimination rounds. There was one throw that is simply unbelievable, if you've ever done any Judo.

Unfortunately, nobody makes money at Judo, so what you get is the MMA crap. it's very discouraging

And therein lay Rousey's problem. She is reputedly a floor fighter deriving from her judo career, whereas Holm was from boxing. For some reason, Rousey fought on her feet rather than going to ground, and that played right into Holm's hands... or foot in this case.

Agreed about MMA, though. I am just surprised at the coverage it has been getting. I've read about it, but there is no way I want to watch it either live or on TV.

mma specifically ufc has been a joke for a decade, it used to be filled with interesting characters and vastly varied fighting styles that made it very interesting. now everyones just a bjj guy with some boxing training.

and everything is illegal now. BORING.

Concert night again with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. The first half was a Brahms Piano Concerto, No 2, with the guest pianist Garrick Ohlsson, who bore a striking resemblance to Major Charles Emerson Winchester, surgeon, MASH, although a little portlier. Again, an excellent performance, although Brahms is not exactly my favourite. Principal cellist Sue-Ellen Paulsen also did a great support job with her solo.

That was followed after the intermission by Sibelius' Symphony No 2. I like Sibelius's moodiness, and he didn't let me down on this one. The final movement was to die for.

And Machka got a few nice unsolicited comments about her hat! She also misread the start time on the tickets, and arrived about 90 minutes early at the concert hall, so we had a nice coffee and cake and did some people-watching at the Grand Chancellor Hotel that is part of the complex.

Man, my HTPC died yesterday. I think it's the power supply - the only time it turned on was after I removed the graphics card and used the onboard video. After that it wouldn't boot at all (no beep patterns), and while it's "on" (but not putting anything to video) I can see the CPU and chassis fans sometimes slowing momentarily. So, I will try replacing the PSU. Failing that, build myself a NUC.

You can really smell the stink from the mushroom farms, depending on which way the wind blows. Allegedly Kennett Square PA is the mushroom capital of the USA.

Whenever we were entertaining, we would call the mushroom farm and have them put 3 lb baskets of specific sizes we ordered out on their back porch for us. Extra large for stuffing, etc. Then we would just drive over and leave the money in a coffee can and take away the 'shrooms. IIRC it was like $1/lb for the freshest mushrooms you have ever seen. All uniform size. Just beautiful. But that was a LOOOONG time ago, 1975 or so.

Nothing goes better with that Chesapeake crab you guys like to talk about so much than the local mushrooms.

I wonder if those folks have gotten into the fancy mushroom trend like criminis, portobellos, *****akes, etc., and even true wild ones like porcinis and morels, or if it is still all white buttons.

Yeah, you aren't quite making it out my way (I'm very north Wilmington, almost PA) but I've biked most of your route at some point. The area around Mt. Cuba (remember this is DE so don't expect a real mountain) is some of my favorite cycling grounds. I took route 82 from the start in DE all the way out past Coatsville on Tuesday and yesterday I went out that way just to ride across Hoopes Reservoir.

Yeah, until we had a baby and got homesick for the Gulf Coast. The there was the winter of 1977-78. I don't know how anyone stayed there after that.

I had a business trip to New Orleans, my home town, in January of '78. Had to slog for hours through snow and slush to get to the airport. Then after landing I was driving to my MIL's house from the airport on Veteran's Highway around 10:00 PM and saw folks playing tennis outdoors in shorts and T-shirts. A light bulb went off in my head: "Something isn't computing here." After the trip and another icy, snowy car ride home from the airport, I went into the lab the next day and found a job in New Orleans in about 10 minutes with a company I knew from summer work. The rest is history as they say. The return to NOLA only lasted about three years, but it got me established in the Gulf Coast chemical industry and led to my long career in Houston. Houston turned out to be the perfect compromise, Gulf Coast lifestyle but in a much better city for raising a family than New Orleans. Close to the relatives, but not too close.

I have landscapers that do that, but they wanted $800 to trim the palm tree and remove a huge shrubbery.

Screw that. $800 will by a lot of tires, chains, cassettes, other consumables.

I worked in Kennett for five years and biked to work for most of that time. Breathing hard combined with that sometimes overwhelming mushroom stink was a great start to my day.
