Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My big hang up was soil mechanics. What was odd was that one of my jobs at IDOT was running a material testing lab where a lot of soil testing was done. I ended up doing OK because I had guys under me that knew what they were doing.

Still, I found my thing when I transferred to the county. I immediately took to construction engineering, surveying and design. I thought that I had gone to heaven after leaving the bureaucracy of IDOT.

My last 8 years were finance and general management but I still snuck a small bridge construction job in for myself every year.

I did a summer job at IDOT... got to count seed bags at a hydro-seeding job, put brass numbers in front of the finish roller on hot asphalt, laid out a run around for an at grade crossing job... and ate a lot of donuts... a lot of donuts.

Government job:

"What time do we get off?"

"4 o'clock but you should be home by 3:30."

Seriously, I worked for a large county and it was night and day compared to state work. Everybody had a great sense of stewardship of the road system from the lowest newbie in maintenance to the engineers, secretaries and County Superintendent. Hard working and dedicated people, something I rarely experienced in state government.

You gave an engineer or a maintenance man a job and he/she did it with professionalism and little supervision.

There's some evidence that processed foods may have more available calories than whole foods but if you keep it to a minority percentage of your total intake, you can eat normal American stuff pretty regularly.

Lol, it was the two glasses of wine that pushed me over my calorie budget for the day. But that's a different issue entirely.
Went to the local family Mexican restaurant for dinner. Fajita taco salad.
