I didn't bother to see 2016 out. I read a book in the evening and then went to bed well before midnight.
Had a pleasant new years day: went for a picnic at a free vintage car show. I'm now just hoping it cools down tonight. First day of 2017 and I've had to turn the air-conditioning on: it's been hovering around 30º all day.
Hope the rest of you reprobates have a good 2017.

Metric-C for January done and dusted. Good ride, although unlike the weather for my NZ friend, ours was overcast, about 20 deg C if that, humidity of 91% and a touch of drizzle.
No summer for us this year, by the looks of it. The PNW folks would be proud.

In fact the rain has been so bad here that Machka has just coined a new term for the state of Tasmania:
The state of Tasrainia.

It rained and rained and rained
The average fall was well maintained
And when the tracks were simple bogs
It started raining cats and dogs.
After a drought of half an hour
We had a most refreshing shower
And then most curious thing of all
A gentle rain began to fall.
Next day but one was fairly dry
Save for one deluge from the sky
Which wetted the party to the skin
And then at last the Rain set in!

Funny problem with my laptop. Starting when I arrived at the MIL's and connected to her WiFi, I have been having frequent system freeze-ups. Two trips to the repair shop have not helped. I am avoiding a Windows 10 reinstall in order to not have to reload all my programs. If it comes to that, I will just buy a new machine. The only reason I am staying with this one is to avoid the program reload anyway. Right now it is behaving fine while I am off the WiFi and on a personal LTE hotspot from my phone.
I am not going to do anything more about it until I get home next week and reconnect to my own WiFi which was working fine when I left. But how could a different WiFi connection cause the system to freeze? BTW, after a couple of minutes, just pressing CNTRL, ALT-DEL unfreezes the machine and brings up the Task Manager as it is supposed to. Then I can cancel the TM and be back in business, but just for a short time if my internet connection is the MIL's WiFi. Repair shop keeps telling me the machine is okay. Now I'm suspecting that is because they are not connecting it to the WiFi here at the MIL's house.

I wouldn't do much 'til you get back home, either, Robert. The most that I would do is update or uninstall/reinstall the driver for your wireless, but your MIL's WiFi is the likely culprit if your lappy is behaving on other networks.

Thanks. I have a travel router in the drawer at home, but I didn't bring it with me. I use it for a secure network in hotel rooms that have a wire to plug into it. I wonder if in future I could connect that to her modem to get a different wireless network at her house and operate okay. My laptop has always behaved when connected through that router. It is pretty old(b/g) so I'm also thinking of buying a new one that can take a wireless signal in and send another one out for when the wired hookup isn't available. They are really handy and pretty cheap.

Thanks, Rowan! That will earn you 3 'look-the-other-way' credits in the coming year.

Happy New Year, everybody!!
I would move all the above 2017 posts to the new Addiction, but it's guaranteed at least one somebody would object, so we'll leave it as is.
And I better add a disclaimer to this obvious joke too as somebody will eventually complain about that too.
