Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Holy bassboat, batman! I should try to get down to SLC tomorrow for the NAHBS, but I haven't really done any planning yet...just too worn out from all the planning for a few days in Portland and then the BIG move down to the AZ desert.

Unfortunately in Rock Springs, you usually can't rent a car between about noon on Saturday and Monday morning.

I'll try a sock with a thicker sole tomorrow, but it's looking like 1.5-2 hours would be the limit at <20°.

@rjones28 will be happy to know that the brakes felt pretty damn good. The rear feels like it's pretty well bedded, but the front still isn't biting quite as well. Shift lever for the RD seems to be missing the ratchet on upshifts, though - the RD shifts, but the next upshift will (occasionally) require that I push the lever the full travel (with little/no resistance), release and then click it again to upshift. Maybe it's the cold, maybe it's the thick gloves providing poor feel - I dunno, but I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Wheels/tires feel fine, but I wasn't exactly gettin' after it today.

No, sadly, the weather has not cooperated. Almost literally solid rain for a few days, on and off, and gloomy the rest of the time. And so the animals have all been holed up wherever they hole up, and the lens is not exactly an indoor sort of toy.

Excuses! Both the 70-200 and the 5Diii are weather sealed, aren't they?

11 bucks for a 10 pack at REI - I'll pick some up. Do people put them on top of their toes? I can't imagine that underneath would be too comfy.

They make teleconverters, I wonder why they don't make focal reducers for cameras? Common ones in astro are .63x and mostly .8x, which would just about make it usable for indoors.

It depends on how tight your shoes are. I can fit them in my shoes with thin fleece socks. They only last a couple of hours though. They might be a problem if you can't get thick socks in our shoes.

edit - under your toes.

5D3 yes, 70-200/2.8ISii yes... but this is the 100-400Lii. The 70-200 went back because I wasn't thrilled with it, and I realized I'm mostly shooting the local wildlife right now, so I went for this. I'll try another 70-200 a bit later.

And yes, it's also weather-sealed. The damn wildlife is all hiding sensibly. Maybe Monday.

They do, though it's usually for putting, say, an EF lens onto a M43 camera, and instead of teleconverter they call it a "speedbooster" (since you take the same light and reverse the TC process, you gain shutter speed.

But I don't know of one for Canon-Canon, and either way, it doesn't matter, because indoors I have the 35/2IS and 100L. And 50A. And 50 STM. And 40 STM. And 24-105Li. I'd just shoot those, except shooting indoors makes it clear how not-presentable this place still is. So no.

I've never used them, but I'm sure they have directions on the pack.
