That is both. Nice.

Why would anyone think you incapable? Of course you are capable.

It's 13.5 miles going in and ~15 on the way home. It's a lot of fun and I'm really feeling good about finally doing it.

Sorry about the raccoon, WhyFi :(.

Getting used to riding in the dark with cars;
Reliably being able to get a certain amount of mileage in on a regular basis without hurting; myself/having major mechanical issues/wanting to vomit at the end of the ride;
Convincing my family that I am in fact capable of doing all of this.
Getting over my own fears and insecurities.

So, this morning, after about eight months since I first though about doing this, I have successfully completed my first bike commute to work. I can't say I loved every minute of it while I was doing it(mostly because I am just not naturally a morning person), but now that I am showered and I have a cup of coffee in front of me I can think of it as fun. And I am looking forward to the return leg home this afternoon (even though, yes, I will probably get rained on).

Believe it or not, the folks here are a good support group for new commuters. I think it was four years ago that LAJ inspired me to do a February commute to work. Good on you, keep it up. Bicycle commuting exposes you to things you would never experience otherwise. I once changed a flat sitting on the front steps of a strip club at 5:30 am, in one of the worst parts of Syracuse. It was suprisingly serene.

I didn't warn them.

That flat tire I had on Sunday was due to a 1/4 inch cut in the sidewall. At least I had a spare GP4000IIs in the parts bin. Could have booted it and limped along for a while, but it just isn't worth it. Ready to go again.

Image is really sharp, I can see the hairs on his chin. But I would have left it in the landscape mode regardless of the raised wing. Portrait mode isn't really appealing for a bird in flight.

Syracuse has a bad section? Get! Out!

I completely agree. Many Addictionites have been very supportive. I remember LAJ in particular posting his commuter bike last fall, even after he won...what was it...State Champion (?). And LesterOfPuppets puts almost everyone to shame :p.

:p The straightforward route alongside the highway is significantly less heavily trafficked at 4:30-5:30am than it is at 3:30-4:30pm, so in order to have a less stressful ride I just took an alternate and slightly longer route on the way home (which also has the benefit of better scenery).
