Does this involve waving, or a lack thereof?

You're gonna rack up the miles.

Longest ever ride without gloves.

Two flybys which I gave head nods to, as I recall.

I completely agree. Many Addictionites have been very supportive. I remember @LAJ in particular posting his commuter bike last fall, even after he won...what was it...State Champion (?). And @LesterOfPuppets puts almost everyone to shame :p.

:p The straightforward route alongside the highway is significantly less heavily trafficked at 4:30-5:30am than it is at 3:30-4:30pm, so in order to have a less stressful ride I just took an alternate and slightly longer route on the way home (which also has the benefit of better scenery).

Well done. the longer way home with better scenery sounds like a win to me.

And as Heathpack said, you will start racking up miles real quick commuting.

Heh.

One always hears that objection to football (sorry, soccer) in particular. Never understood it.

Velo Vol 06-12-17 09:23 PM

Near the middle of the route there are two climbs separated by a few hundred feet. Not long, but ridiculously steep (per Strava they touch 18% and 20%). The last three+ times I've gone there I did the walk of shame on both them. But today I cleared the first one. :bday: I probably had no chance on the second one but my bid blew up prematurely when my wheel spun on a leaf that was laying on the road. Oh well.

I started the climbs in my emergency gear, if that tells you anything.

Believe it or not, the folks here are a good support group for new commuters. I think it was four years ago that LAJ inspired me to do a February commute to work. Good on you, keep it up. Bicycle commuting exposes you to things you would never experience otherwise. I once changed a flat sitting on the front steps of a strip club at 5:30 am, in one of the worst parts of Syracuse. It was suprisingly serene.

The morning portion of a commute is one of my favorite times, and I miss it. People are generally pretty kind, and since I was generally lit up like a Christmas tree, sometimes literally, I got a wide berth. The colder the better til 0, then it got a little silly. At 5:30-6:00 am, surprisingly serene can happen in the most unexpected places.

No jersey for me, but I did get a gold cup. :) You will learn to roll with the flow, as you become more accustomed to the traffic habits. Never let your guard down, but also along those lines, confidence will bring enjoyment.

I don't know, maybe the prevalence of 0-0 games and the fact that they're over if a team gets ahead 2-0?

When I read Audax as one of their models, I thought Audax Australia and Audax UK were in trouble. But then wouldn't it be great to see a role reversal -- Specialized being sued for thieving the official names of cycling organisations. Won't happen, of course; the organisations are too nice.

"Save your legs, not your gears", This is one of the best pieces of climbing advice.

When you can clear both, will you become a serious cyclist?:p

Kudos given.

What is your emergency gear?

I use mine too often to be called emergency.

I think I did do it a few years ago, but I'm older and less serious now. :o

In other news, my bottom bracket is noisy.

39x25

When I went from 10spd to 11spd, I made the 11th cog my new emergency gear.

I wouldn't call it emergency.

This can also be achieved by accidentally setting the H limit too tight.:innocent:

Brakes being bled at the shop. Mentioned BMC, thought I was looking at a $3k msrp bike, was looking at the ultegra $4k big brother. Damn them BMC's are $$$.

Thinking a BMC 105 out the door for under $2k in a couple months; OR non BMC might be able to swing ultegra, carbon, discs at under $2k. Would be 3 full upgrades from my alloy, rim, old style 105.
