Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weak coffee this morning. I don't know what I did wrong.

Went out for a short local off-road ride on the CX bike. Had to trespass across 30 feet of rough rocky terrain which was quite a challenge in my road shoes. I also noticed that I feel more secure riding on the grass hump between the gravel lanes than on the gravel (which feels loose and twitchy), is that normal??

Possibly. Depends on the type of gravel and the tires. Loose stuff with ~30-32mm tires feels squirmy to me at times. Loose stuff with big chunks, even with 38mm+ tires, always feels squirmy to me.

Speaking of gravel rides, @RPK79 - are we doing the Filthy50? It's supposed to be really wet going in to the weekend and it's obviously going to be a pain in the ass to get to. I'm leaning towards passing on it, but could be convinced... maybe.

I find that I like hard dry dirt or well-cut grass the best. Longer grass is ok but may hide dangerous objects like big rocks or sticks. Hard-pack fine grit or gravel is also ok. Loose or fresh gravel really makes me feel like I am water-skiing and gives me the willies!!

Someone thought enough of it to outfit in in Campagnolo componentry, so I'm hoping it's a Flyer.

I've only ever had a couple of Carlton's, so I don't know that much about the different models. Here're a couple of photos of a '65 Catalina, which is a swell bike, but no Flyer.
That is sweet.

There's a few of these around on craigslist, I'll see if I can grab one of them.

I just don't see the lure of gravel. I'm just not a very adventurous cyclist. I didn't enjoy mtn biking even when it was new. Give me the open road.

In fairness, gravel roads are opener roads, 'round about these parts, at least.

I really prefer the road too. But isn't gravel the future of road cycling?

Heh.

When I was growing up we had an outdoor clothes line. Very green! Sheets and stuff smell very nice dried that way. It has an interesting effect on jeans, though.

One time a wasp lodged inside one of my pants. That wasn't so good.
