Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Haha I have a friend who thinks she is gluten intolerant. But she "does better" with lavash bread, which of course contain gluten.

I'm not saying that she doesn't feel better when she eats lavash bread over regular bread- but the difference is not gluten. I think somehow she associates gluten with the texture of regular bread and just picking something unleavened somehow feels or seems healthier to her.

Along those lines, I was making Mojitos for some friends on a girls weekend. One of the friend asks me what the ingredients are. After I tell her, she requests I make her one without the sugar, because of "carbs". Um, yes I can make it that way. But it will not taste good. Nor am I sure you could really refer to the concoction as a Mojito at that point.

I have no fear of carbs. But maybe that's why I'm a chub.

Your arterioles get more stiff as you age, just like your joints do. If the arterioles get stiff enough, your blood pressure goes up.

Means you don't have unstable angina, you can climb a flight of stairs without chest pain or shortness of breath.

I tell patients to think of their circulatory system like pipes. When we are young the pipes are rubber and stretch, and the volume from each heartbeat is absorbed in the capacitance of the arterioles as they allow more volume.

As we get older the tubes get stiffer, more "hydraulic" if you will, and the pressure increases.

That's why high blood pressure is rare in young people but common, almost EXPECTED, in old folks.

I have no chest pain with exertion. What chest pain I was having was not related to activity at all... mostly at rest.

Shortness of breath? How may stairs we talkin' 'bout here? Gravity is my foe on foot or on bike. I would say probably not an issue. But my HR and RR increase quickly with anything I do, but that may be (a symptom of) why I'm in the mess to begin with.

The ANS test has some measurement of the stiffness of the small arteries. That being off the scale on the bad side for me back when all of this stuff was discovered was a big wakeup call.

I'm inclined to trust your friend on how she feels (though she's clearly not gluten-intolerant); Trader Joe's chocolate hurts my stomach while Nestle doesn't. What's the difference? Effed if I know, but I'm not going to keep eating Trader Joe's chocolate because it's "in my head". It was so surprising to me that it took a while to put together what was seemingly-randomly causing me discomfort, but once I know, it's getting removed from my diet.

So there's not even really anything that can be done to prevent it? That's depressing.

Well, it does typically happen with age. We know that doing all the good stuff you ARE doing, like not getting heavy, exercising, keeping your cholesterol low, not smoking, will PREVENT it from happening sooner.

But when you are 75 you may still have high blood pressure anyway.

I can take a crack at it. Generally healthy generally means you got a 3 in 4 chance of surviving until at least 65.

In deed, in fact as you know they've recently raised the bar on what's considered acceptable BP for senior folks.

Yes Hummer, there's a bunch of aging things that are inescapable. After 30 years I still resent the vision degradation.

But otherwise, you just rejoice that you're still above the ground and you keep on pushing.

Speaking of birds I was ecstatic last week to finally add a Snowy Owl to my collection of photos.
I had been chasing them eagerly all over the place the last few years with no success. Finally
found this one only 35 miles away. BillyD is happy.

Now the eternal quest for better shots.
