Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's been years and years since I've seen it. I do recall from a film craft standpoint to has great scene composition and use of light. Especially for its time.

You say pretentious like it's a bad thing.

Subframe, bolts of all sorts... I wouldn't want to be the guy who tried to service the suspension or transmission, for example.

I'm getting ready to replace the trans filter on the minivan.

Need to start shopping for new suspension components, too.

Yeah, I do a good undercarriage wash at the end of each winter and sometimes even in between snow events, but I am sure there is some rust in there. The car is almost 20 and I am hoping for 25, but even if it dies tomorrow, it has served me well.

I would certainly put Casablanca on my top 5 list, but would also put Kane on the list.

"Pretentious" is almost always negative, by definition. Much like "simplistic".

I haven't seen Citizen Kane, but a lot of old movies fail on either fundamentals of pacing or modern expectation of pacing, depending on your point of view. My submissions would be "Grand Prix", "Gone in Sixty Seconds", and "Bullitt". All three have their moments, but have large chunks of absolutely wasted time that contribute nothing to the plot or feeling.

For a literary example, I'd submit "Clan of the Cave Bear" and its sequels as having huge tracts of pages that don't move the plot, don't develop characters, and don't really do anything at all besides pad the length. The "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, on the other hand, are much longer. By contrast however, nothing is wasted, and any attempt to trim them down would lose the richness of the setting and depth of plot and character.

But maybe that's just my opinion.

I don't know those ice and fire books, but would put War and Peace as my favorite long book.

That and it's dumb in that it keeps more people from getting in to, and invested in, the auction. Once invested, auctions often become more about 'winning' than the actual sale.
