Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just got an invite to tour the project that will extend the Long Island Railroad to a new passenger terminal being built underneath Grand Central Terminal. Tres cool.

That's not the project that's getting all the fu$$ in the news, is it?

I've never been to RVA. I watched that (rerun) 60 Minutes segment on the avenue where they have Confederate monuments. Is that a good street for riding?

This is cool. A good friend of mine is working for Virginia's passenger rail department and gets to go tour new stations and other rail-related locations all the time, he sent me a bunch of photos from Amtrak's Beech Grove shops a couple weeks ago. I also watched a docu on the building of Grand Central recently, incredible to see how they moved a massive rail yard underground over 100 years ago.

The Worlds course in '15 featured it-

It is a nice wide road with a big shoulder so it would be decent for riding, but it's cobbled up and down the length where they have statues so I usually avoid it. Zwift tastefully turned the Confederate "heroes" into cyclists on rearing bicycles when they recreated the course in-game.

Similar story about 6 weeks ago, coming back from a ride saw this neat flashing red light on the other side of the road. Stopped to pick up the "free" light. Turned out it was mine that had dropped of on my outbound leg. Couldn't believe no one hadn't picked up by then.

I also have a suspect right shoulder/arm, and suspect left leg and foot that may be spine related. The most important things are that I am still alive, my State has a vital requirement for employee insurance that covers what happened and my continued care, and I am married to a woman (Machka) who has shown me a truly extraordinary level of love and dedication. I am also being care supervised at home on week days by a woman who also is excellent in her method and realities.

If anything is totally worthwhile in Bike Forums, it is the revelation of what some posters or their partners experienced close to dying, and their recovery to continue living rewarding lives. I am truly grateful for all those.

Catch you all later again.

I have observed items on the rosdsnainride stay there for years...many years. Of course that's if they are lodged in a joint in the concrete. One was a huge bolt st the top of an overpass. A friend and I passed it and laughed about it for about 10 years. Another isba golf ball near the Herman Park Golf Course in a joint in the concrete at a signal light. Been watching that for so long I can’t tell you. Nothing that belongs to me.

8 years ago a couple on a motorcycle investigated a blinking red light on the side of the road. They found me laying unconscious, face down in the ditch.

Over 2 weeks ago, I lost an eyeglass mirror, no idea where. So, last night, I stop at a convenience store that is a popular stopping point for cyclists and the cashier asks me if I lost a mirror. One look at it and I knew it was mine. The guy says he probably asked 30 cyclists and they all said it wasn’t theirs. I lucked out that no one had claimed it, I guess.

Not that I know of. I know the light rail in Brooklyn was a while back. And there is the second tube under the Hudson between NYC and NJ. That's desperately needed. Gov. Christie managed to derail it years ago, but I believe it's moving forward. Within the last 6 months or so I did an engineering reimbursement agreement with Amtrak since the alignment of the tunnel approach will impact our property.

It really disgusts me that partisan politics holds up or kills badly needed projects. The current Hudson tube is in bad shape, thanks in part to age and also Super Storm Sandy. If it has to be shut down before a new one is built it would cause massive problems. And note that it's not a question of if it will have to be closed. It's a question of how soon.

Considering the amount of commerce it will support and the amount economic activity the project will generate, it's a bargain. Anyone who has been to Penn Station in NYC at a busy time (which is most of the day) should know how vital the link to NJ is, with both New Jersey Transit and Amtrak carrying a countless number of people between NY and NJ and points beyond, both north and south. NJ Transit alone sends literally hundreds of trains through the tubes every weekday.

If you ever want to mindlessly watch something somewhat interesting, there's a video of a good portion of the northeast rail corridor taken from the back of an Amtrak train-

when he tapped my feet to see if I was alive, he said I didn’t move. He said they were about to call the police, and then I got up and tried to get back on my bike. Thankfully they stopped me from riding home. He went home to get his truck, while his wife stayed with me. They took me to the marina where I lived, and night security immediately called NPS when they saw my condition. NPS called for a life-flight because they feared I had a spinal injury.

They were right, and that blinky probably saved my life.
