Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Midweek ride was great. Weather could not be better, good group, and the fun was 100%.

Had an appointment with the nurse.

It lead to an unscheduled bone density scan. According to the machine, my spinal measurement was OK. One of the hip measurements was borderline osteopenia. This is a modest improvement from what a recall the previous reading was, several years ago.

It turned out to be a tank and a half day. The rest of that downed tree was in the way and, upon cleaning it up, I was knackered
Might be time for a nap.

Our stateroom fridge is kept stocked and tonight, I noticed the tonic water is labeled as ‘vegan.’ I don’t know muck about tonic water but I’ve never worried about it being vegan, before.

Are the drinks inside included or is that a $15 bottle of tonic water?

I know when I make tonic water at home I start with some chicken stock.

No Plasmodium falciparum (the malaria pathogen) were harmed in testing the quinine?

Not much. Long-term steroid consumption is no bueno for bone health.

The Older Boy learned a valuable lesson this week. His favorite drink is apple juice diluted with soda water. The other day, he bought tonic water instead. 64 oz. of it. And he made his usual drink with it. Imagine his dismay.

He offered it to me, but it was Safeway Brand tonic water, so I declined. He's a teetotaler, because he figures with the ASD and social anxiety he's got enough going on.

ASD?
I recently became a teetotaler, just because. Actually, I had a beer when in Ohio, and it appeared to cause my arrythmia to kick in. Huh? My phone doesn't know arrythmia. It thinks it should be carry this.
There are virtually no Mexican beers I can stand, and so I only drink when north anyway. Belize, on the other hand, has Belikin Stout, which is the best beer I've found in all of Central America. Possibly all of Latin America, but there are a host of countries I haven't visited in South America.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder, formerly known as Asperger's Syndrome, till everyone learned just what Hans Asperger was up to during WWII.

Thanks. Does he do ok with it generally? We had a neighbor young man with it when we lived in Merida. Social anxiety as a separate thing? How does it present itself as distinct from ASD?

He does pretty well with it. He's got a "persona" he adopts when dealing with customers, for example. I don't know if the social anxiety is so much a separate thing, or whether it's a function of lacking the ability to read others' emotions well in real time.

I had an intern for two summers who was pretty autistic for a high-functioning kid, with sky-high anxiety, visible soothing behaviors, etc. The goal was to go to med school. I asked them (flamboyantly non-binary too, of course) how they thought they would handle a high stress clinical environment with lots of demanding and difficult social interaction. The answer was that as long as there’s a script to follow everything is doable, if tough. I do have to say, this kid was very good at giving talks and answering questions on their feet, but there will be no hiding their differences. I wrote them a strong and honest letter and located some academic docs with ASD for them to contact.

Last week I spent nearly the equivalent of a pretty nice plastic bike on boat batteries. Thought 1 was “Whelp, no new bike with electronic shifting and room for bigger tires this year.” Thought 2 is, “Let’s buy a medium-cage rear derailleur for old bike because no new bike this year.” I wonder what else I can rationalize on this basis.

Sounds like you bought the batteries for LSS, and now you need the bike to balance the ledger.

Nah, the batteries were for both of us and, sappy as it sounds, whatever makes her happy brings me joy. …at least since we got past the jewelry stage.

While searching for my big magnet, to find a well loved tiny screwdriver I put down while working on the sprinkler system, I stumbled upon an old tripod I've been carrying around for decades and finally have a use for. Now to find the magnet and then find the screwdriver.
The tripod is Tower brand with what appear to be brass telescoping legs.
