Secondly, when I pedal the thing makes a clackety clackety sound, like tiny maraccas. Doesn;t mappen when I coast. Happens in all gears and either sitting or standing, although I do notice it most going slow up hills, I guess because there's less wind noise. It's not the gears cause I've had a play. Thought it might be the bottom bracket or cranks but there doesn't seem to be any play down there and it's still spinning smooth.

1/ +1 ed, or did those guys overtighten the headfittings?

2/ My guess would be one farked ball bearing or a slightly pitted race in the BB. If it is Shimano, they run on balls. They can feel smooth by hand but with one farked bearing will creak and click and be rat**** inside. I pulled one to bits once to see if I could fix it. One bearing had disintergrated. It felt smooth but clacked and farted when ridden on. The bastards can't be fixed, they aren't designed to be put back together. You'll have to chuck it and get another one.

Bugger. What do headsets cost? :(

not sure why it happens. roof racks that hold the whole bike like the pro ones are better....but you don;t need to be hearing that now.

$80-$300??

Don't spend that much. Get a Miche or Stronglight or cheaper Ultegra or something. Expensive headsets are the most overrated componenents IMO. Cheaper sets last fine if maintained...or not put on roofmounts :) (sorry)

It's FSA for what it's worth. Are they the same? I can hear the cashregister dinging right now. :(

BTW, when you say liek the pro ones, you mean like this Thule one?

http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/prod...t_id=8&sku=594

How about tow ball mounts? I rekon you snap your top tube going over a big bump with those things.

Dunno. I suspect balls and roller bearings in FSA but don't quote me on that. Is it ISIS spline? I've seen quality ISIS spline BB's on ebay for bugger all.

Headsets. Just checked Cecil Walker online - Very nice Stronglight ones for $99. Campag record for less than $170. That was with a 2 second search.

Says octalink. That could be a cheese bearing for all I know.

$99 at cecils. Probably $250 at the local shop knowing them. Cool. I'm set. :(

[Edit] BTW, is there any downside to keeping riding the bike in it's current state till the steering don't turn and the pedals stop turning?

classic1 02-08-06 12:35 AM

Octalink is the Shimano spline pattern. I checked FSA website. They have about 15 different BB's with balls, sealed races etc depending on the model. Yours might even be fixable if it is a sealed bearing model!!

I'd attend to the sticking headset asap. BB should be ok for a week or two if you can put up with the click and there are no cracks in the cranks (better check that) or play in the BB. Is this where I put in a legal disclaimer? :)

badsac 02-08-06 12:38 AM

Thanks for that. No worries about the legals. I'll be cursing you from my hospital bed or on a cloud no matter what anyway. ;)

You won't have any problems riding the bike with the pedals creaking, the BB will just get destroyed in the next 1000km or so. Better to get it serviced straight away, while it's still possibly repairable.

With Shimano stuff its almost always the right cup working loose and it's easy to fix: just have to pull the whole crank assembly apart to get to it :) And once you get it it keeps coming back more and more frequently. I only bother the LBS once with this problem before shoving a new BB assembly in. Pay as much or as little as you want. 105 BB is just as good as Ultegra for training/general riding IMHO.

Racing was just great last night.

Pointscore leader took the night off so it was my big chance to make up some ground on him. As fate would have it the guy running third on the pointscore was blisteringly fast and made up 5 points on me instead! To make matters worse the handicapper finally got wise and halved my handicap for the one lap screamer. Oh the pain...

In the end I made a miserable 3 points on the leader instead of 10. I hate being slow... :(

Funniest part of the night was the Miss'n'Out grade handicap. Riders were having trouble hearing the calls, so PShaw generously offered to be the relay caller 20m up the track. Trouble was the riders were then calling for an interpreter coz they couldn't understand the thick Scottish brogue :roflmao: Sorry Paul :) It was bloody funny tho.

mrkott3r 02-08-06 03:21 PM

ahaha. I didnt think Paul's accent was that bad.

Tell me how you work out the pointscore? Doesnt it just apply to 1 race each week?

Usually, but there were two races highlighted in the program this week. So I'm guessing 5 start points + 5,3,2,1 in both the one lap screamer and the Win and Out. Wait and see I suppose.

pshaw 02-08-06 08:10 PM

Climbo, u unterested?
