is it old? Im guessing fairly old, but I have recently pulled it apart cleaned, noticed there wasnt much wear put it back on the bike. It stayed the gears up. I think mainly because the lever did change position and Im sure I didnt touch it before hand. |

I'm not much into violence, but this morning I found that here's nothing more satisfying than whacking the driver side window with you pump's valve locking mechanism. Gives off a really sharp and loud "wake up to yourself or the next noise you hear might be breaking glass" sound.
|
so what dastardly act of driver incomptence prompted that departure from your normal zen like state?

Thing was there was plenty of time and space for him to go around me safely when he first caught up. But not for long. A seemingly endless torrent of traffic emerged from nowhere, like a very surreal version of karma out of control. I thought it was pretty funny at the time.

jock - maybe a "honk if you're horny" sticker on the back of your bike may stop them blasting you so much?

Guys, what's the official rule of going the the front of stopped traffic at a red light? I always do that if the light isn't going to change before I get there, that way ever driver knows I'm there and has to go around me.
Last week I went to the front and made obvious jestures that I was turning right, and when the green arrow went, this guy flys past me screming his head off. I flipped him the bird and that was that. It's perfectly legal doing that, yeah? I mean, I've been to intersections where the bike lane leads up to the stop lights, and right accross the road at the front is a box with a white bike rider sprayed on it, indicating to me that that's what you're supposed to do. I'm a road rules ****** - my rule is 'No harm no foul' usually when it comes to riding on the road (That's what happens when you're an inner city boffin). Does anyone know what the official rule is? Was this guy just pissed that he didn't get laid the previous night or wot? |
first q? was there a tram involved? Us NSW'ers get confused with that :)
On a green arrow, hell yeah, I'd do that. If it was a green light only and you had to give way to oncoming cars, I'd probably just wait at the back of the line so the cars could go straight ahead without me blocking them but if you have a green arrow then go for it. I believe in NSW you are allowed to go ahead of the line in any situation like that. RTA Quote: "Cyclists also have some special rights, which include: Riding two abreast, no more than 1.5 m apart ........Travelling to the front of a line of traffic on the left hand side of the stopped vehicles........... Travelling in Bus Lanes and Transit Lanes. However, cyclists cannot travel in Bus Only Lanes Travelling on the footpath where indicated by signage Cycling on the footpath if the cyclist is less than 12 years old. An adult, who is riding in a supervisory capacity of a cyclist less than 12 years old, may also ride with the young cyclist on the footpath Turning right from the left hand lane of a multi-lane roundabout with the proviso the cyclists must give way to exiting traffic." |

RTA Quote:.... So yes, you are legally entitled to ride up the left side of traffic to the front of the queue if you want to. Two things come to mind tho: Often the path down the left side is blocked by a motorist too far left. Is it OK to lanesplit to get past the blockage? Being at the front of the queue now puts you in more danger than if you had stayed in the lane of traffic, because you're off balance and not clipped in for the first few metres and drivers behind you cannot determine a predictable path. Should there be an amendment to the rules to allow cyclists to legally roll through red lights when cross traffic is given amber (and where safe) so they can get up to speed without hindering traffic? [edit]if you get bored you can read the entire thing here: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/rulesregul...austr_dl1.html [/edit] |

Damn, sucks to have yer steeds nicked. Hope he gets them back.
I've never had a bike stolen. Maybe because the seat of my bikes are 10ft off the ground and they're usually pink, gold or orange? Good news about the 'ride to the front at the lights' rule. Yay for me, now I appear consciencious. *thumbs up* |

I've been finding that traveling though traffic on the right side is sometimes better here in melbourne. People tend to sit left of the tram lines which usually blocks cyclists and gives you the joy of having no escape from opening doors. |
hey Thylo, why does your new avatar have a pretty bow on the top of the skull?

If I'm going straight (and let's face it, I'm only talking about Beach Rd coz that's the only place I have the guts to ride), I roll up to the front then sit out of the way of the cars. When the light goes green, and if there's only a few cars in the left lane, I'll let them pass me before I swing into the lane. I ain't got the guts to do the 'right hand turn' trick that you described -- it sometimes takes me a few seconds to get my put in the pedal, and I'm not doing a w@nky track stand in front of 50 drivers!!! :p |
I don't like being at the back of a queue at traffic lights since I got rear ended in my car by some silly chick talking on her mobile phone. If I had of been on my bike I would have been squashed. I'll go up the front where there's some metal protecting me thanks.
