Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So you Sydney folk who have a better idea of how long it takes to get places, how long do yers rekon it would take to get up to St Albans from those two locations, on relatively quiet roads and sticking reasonably close to the speed limit?
Dependin on baby situation, I'll either camp or drive in the morning. From the north I reckon 1h30m.

New baby? I'd camp.

You'll be a tired sucker for the race anyway.

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

I actually went for a ride today. Please, a round of golf claps everyone

Funny thing about being in a cardio black hole. Lungs don't work, but power is still there. This dude I've seen before on an all white GT came flying past me, so after umming and ahhhing for about 10 seconds, I decided to be a tosser and catch him. Up in into the big ring, put the powder down...cool, catching him....look at speedo....53kph!

WTF?

Reckon I did that for about a whole 30 seconds!

*pulls he-man pose*

I can hear Nev p¡ssing himself laughing.

<-- has vision of Wokka laying a line across the handlebars, inhaling hard, then disappearing in a cloud of dust.

We went for a ride Sunday. It's weird being in shorts and a t shirt, and riding past heaps of snow.

Yes....errm....."putting the powder down" is a famous Melbourne saying However, my lungs do feel like they're predominantly made from dust this morning, so it's probably not far away from the truth.

I wish I had your motivation Nev. I just struggle to get on the bike this year. It's either a mild form of burn-out or something else to blame on getting married.

I can imagine it would be weird. That kind of behaviour is usually reserved for young ladies looking to attract cock. Maybe some longs would have been more appropriate?

In Utah "Attract Cock" has a completely different meaning though, and probably involves a shotgun and a saucepan.

Well, okay. Maybe a little bit of bragging that I actually do know of, and perhaps might even be allowed in such a house. But honestly, after the farce of the Alpine Classic, I just want to finish this one.

Yeah, pick on the Aussie accent. This from the guy who buys his knicks at a "bake" shop.

Tiger, somewhere I have a pic of my little Aussie Princess holding a shotgun.

I'd kind of assumed all the accomodation around the area would be booked out so close to the event. You're right though. I'll have a phone around next week.

BTW, with you being a mtb freak and all, I'm a little surprised you're not doing it.

eh, I reckon it's just my 3rd or 4th midlife crisis that motivates me! Is that self 'defecating' enough?. My first midlife crisis resulted in me going back to play cricket when I was 32. ........

......And wives are THE WORST thing for the kms, unless they're married to somebody else!

Homewrecker

Ow. Just found out where that 53kph went yesterday - straight to the lower back. *twinge*

My problem is is that I can still remember when I could go out and hammer 100kms with no training and still survive. Problem is....that was 10 years ago.

*knock, knock* Is this thing on? *cough*

Has everyone gone away for the long weekend already?

Anyway, I'm having lunch and I'm bored, so let's play 'Thylacine's Hypothetical'.

Say I wanted a new roadie and could pretty much do anything. Do I go 'tech' and be a w@nker and do a Carbon/ti frame, or do I be classy and do a lugged steel frame and forks and go sick on the paint?

Oooh! Oooh! I can answer this one. Do a steel frame, with no paint at the lug junctions, just polished and clear coat.

If you're gonna be a w@nker, use both hands. Carbon/ti frame with an Army paint scheme. Oh, yeah.

Go high tech. Push yerself. Don't worry about that old foggey steel crap. You've been there, done that. You can still throw a bit of paint on the titanium carbon jobbie. Make sure it's flowers, or red with a hammer and sickle, then start a thread on it.

[edit] Actually hammer and sickle's a bit old. How about red with a bunch of yellow stars? That'd work. Except probably no one would get it.
