Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Racing in the rain is the same as racing dry, except you get wet! Logical , eh?

Your booties will keep all the moisture out for a total distance of about 30m. After that they keep you feet warm and wet, so your skin goes white and swells up massive inside your shoes. You get used to the squelching in your shoes after a while/your feet go to sleep.

You have no brakes. Neither does anyone else. Carry on.

You will be able to identifiy various parts of the course by taste.

Your glasses will fog up plenty and get covered in **** all the time. You will run out of rinsing water at about half distance. After that you'll be forced to try to wipe them clean. This will only scratch the lenses and smear grease all over them, making them useless. As soon as you take them off in order to see the rider ahead will flick a tiny bit of road grit into you eye.

A bunch sprint is not a desirable thing.

When you get back to your car you will discover that one of your windows was slightly ajar and all your warm clothes and the seats are now cold and wet.

Oh yeah, and you will need to clean your bike when you get home. Level 3 water restrictions are in place: don;t waste water

sounds great, where do i sign up~ !

1st MTB race ever was in torrential summer rain. i wear glasses, so of course they fogged. bad enough that i had sweet FA idea where i was or even if i was on the race course any more.

oh, and id just had the LBS tdo a rebuild on my bike the week before including new chain, casette, cables and wheel bearings. all of which were not worth a pinch of poo by the end of the race.

Whatever do you mean? Someone fell off using clipless pedals, someone shaved their legs, and yet another needs to discuss double vs triple...... How much better can it get?!

happy bday Ed

congrats hdt for the spooky confluence post. I wanted that but got called onto the tools. That was fun. Fixing roof leaks. Blunnies are surprisingly good on corro in the wet. A towel upstream, drizabone draped over you and the troublespot, propane torch in one hand and silicon gun in the other. Woohoo, I won't even need to go play in traffic this week

We'd be UNIT. What, you've never heard of us?
We're uh on the way up. yeah.

Bikes: Wilier, Alchemy, Merida MTB,

There's a cyclocross crit being run in Melbourne this Saturday afternoon. Somewhere near Kew golf course. Pretty rare type of event in this neck of the woods I suspect.

Used to race road around Kew Blvd....and train there as a youngster.

Correct. I've raced a couple of the summer evening crits around the "P**f Hill" loop. Can be surprising if you train round there during the day.

Tyre recommendations people. Thinkin' prorace 2. I destroyed my rear tyre on Sunday. (a rock cut it!)
Might as well get some bar tape. The cinelli stuff looks good unless anyone can recommend something for someone who rides gloveless.

Hey Expat, on the bus going past civic bikes today, looks like they have had an update, new look exterior with huge trek, lemmond logos, new paint job etc. Didnt go inside. What bikes were they selling before? Dont see many treks/lemmonds around Newy.

you can't go past the Pro Races for quality, but they're just TOO expensive, so I don't buy them unless I get a good deal for $60 or less. I'd only buy them online at Probikekit if I were you. There are other, cheaper tyres around that are almost as good, such as Vredestein Tricomps and Maxxis Columbierre. I don't know why the Tricomps have come down (you should be able to get them for under 60 bucks at a shop); it must just be lack of popularity. The only Schwables I like are the slicks. Specialized tyres get a bum rap, but I've got some slick Mondos and Mondo Pros that I quite like.

I stopped buying the expensive bar tape years ago, but I like the look of the new stuff which 'looks' like carbon, and has a gel underlay -- I can't remember who makes it
