Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'll have to try to find that and watch it again . . . I'm not sure I've even watched it before . . . even though I can't imagine I skipped seeing a DeNiro flick.

Double Z race day. First a TT, a little bit long for my liking, and TBH a little difficult. Watts were meh and the sensations weren't great. But w/e, you can't feel great all the time.

Next race, extremely tame start... then it started to get punchy going into the little climbs. I put a big dig up this corkscrew ramp (circled in red) and spat a few off the back. This made it single file with little gaps going into the bigger climb (circled in green). This group of 6 (of 13 starters) would finish together. I put in another dig a couple of miles out, and had a 3s gap with another rider, but we got caught. Somehow I still managed 2nd in the sprint, nice.

Some Quincy Jones for FF. Categorically a straight ahead jazz album, but the instrumentation in this peace qualified it for FF. I love it when the guitar player takes over and plays the melody/head a couple minutes in, it just hits so hard

Lily's preschool is closed, and my MIL is out of town, so I have to take the day off work to watch her (Liz is a 1099). Gonna take her to the Zoo a little bit and get a couple hours of sight seeing in before nap time

Just enjoying the switch from overcast to sunny and gorgeous over the last hour, as the morning fog burns off. Also trying to figure out what to do for Mrs. GJ's 68th birfday. We don't do presents much anymore, because we already have enough stuff. Mostly we do cake and ice cream.

It’s free on Prime. I watched it over two nights. When it was in theaters it had an intermission like Doctor Shivago did.

will listen to tonight. I am on my own this week as the Mrs. is cruising the Gulf of America. Fletcher needs his walks and food and I have to double up on the love. I don't want him to be shorted on his snuggles. Someone has to do it.

Nasty day, here. No fake cartoon riding. I will be destroying cardboard/paper with my son and grandson all afternoon.

Hmm. Either a big recycling event, or target practice of some sort.

Help me decide, oh Afflictionati.

Mrs. tm is going to London with a girlfriend, so I'm thinking about doing a road trip slash altitude camp slash climbing camp while she's away. Minimal requirement is a cabin/condo with a kitchen. Some candidates:

Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Good elevation, great climbs a brief drive away. Close to zero services at the resort.

Kingsbury Grade, Stateline NV. Decent elevation, restaurant on site, big climbs nearby, South Lake Tahoe services.

Bear Valley Village. Good elevation, climbs out the door (Pacific Grade, Ebbetts Pass), small grocery, pizza nearby.

Mammoth Lakes. Great elevation, killer climbs, real town with shops/grocery/coffee/restaurants. Farthest drive.

You may have an unrealistic picture of both my financial situation AND my appeal to women under 68.

I saw that. Between the beastly heat earlier this week the 40 7 days and 40 nights of rain, it's really not selling me on Pennsylvania.

The other thing to consider is just how much closer to Velo Vol you would be.

Mammoth. Would be my choice. It has everything and more, but a bit of a haul getting there.
Kinngbury: Stateline is ok, and its a bit of a haul to south shore.
Bear Valley, scenic but limited facilities unless you like to go shopping and cook for yourself while the Mrs lives it up
Kirkwood: Close but limited amenities

Going solo? You could ask Sierra Rider about his rides, his pictures look like TM territory.

Another good source is Biker395.He has a place in June Lake and has done a lot of miles in the Sierras. He's super friendly.

Of course, you have done a bit of riding up there yourself.

I forgot to charge my phone last night, so I'm waiting on that before I go for a ride. When I was younger, so much younger than today, I didn't even HAVE a phone with me on rides, but I figure that being on the high side of 65, it's a good idea to have one. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

Meanwhile, I'm feeling sleepy, as if a hypnotist were swinging a watch and saying, "Your eyelids are getting heavy, so heavy you can barely keep them open..."

I guess this is life in retirement - the perennial battle between wanting to do things and wanting to do nothing.
