Sorry it's not fusion for Friday, but I was enjoying some sophisticated shredding while having my after work shower and getting dressed for a ride...

Here's a mellow tune with John Medeski on the organ.

Restarting isn't fun. Having to work hard to do what used to be easy makes it feel like it'll be a long road back. But, I figured that I might as well get to it - next year is going to arrive either way, and when it arrives, I can either be out of shape or I can put in work to get some fitness back... assuming we that don't all die in a storm of nuclear fire, of course.

Make sure to start out with "Well, actually..." and to be extra-friendly, call her "Little Lady" or something similar.

I don't find myself in big-big with my standard (53/39) bikes, but I do often with the Canyon's 52/36. It's slightly louder, so I notice it if I'm on a quiet road.

ive been off the bike for extended periods due to injury, and not much else. my extent of training and racing has waxed and waned, but I've generally been in shape to finish mid pack for the last twenty or so years
for me it takes me 2-3 months to get most of the way back, in power or raw physicality. that last 5-10% takes hard work. but, ive never dealt with really serious injury or gained a lot of weight. i actually weigh less when im not riding a ton. i get a bit bloated when im eating a lot and drinking a ton of water.

I've posted this before but I think it's worth another listen.

more Scofield for Fusion Fridays. This one has the form of a "rondo", with a repeating melodic motif, and improvisation or otherwise different parts in between. There is a little break of a few measures after each rondo, that increases in duration each time. I find it amusing.

Waiting for first light, rental bike ready. I had to crank up the saddle for my freaky long legs. The fit is not perfect, but good enough for a ride. The goal is to summit Soledad Mountain and explore areas around there, plus a ride around Fiesta Island. Must finish early in time for Padres later.

The area we are staying is called Cortez Hill. I can confirm it’s a hill, but a bit too short for cycling purposes. Local landmark is shown below.

Nothing beats starting off with “sweetheart”.

Well, yeah, it could be worse, and I've got 6 or 7 weeks of progress under my belt. Still, that route at that pace would have been pretty casual for me.
Still, the positives from the ride: I felt less horrible after that than I did after a 30ish mile ride a couple weeks ago and my jersey and vest don't feel like an boa constrictor trying to squeeze the air from my lungs, anymore, so I must be dropping some of the excess weight.

Garmin and Intervals say that my FTP is about 80-85% of what it used to be, but FTP was never my strongest suit, and I feel way more than 15-20% away. Punchy efforts, and being able to recover and do it again, were more my playground, and that's way off, right now. I'll keep working though, because what the hell else is there to do?
