Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whoa, thunder!

For those who don't live around here, Bay Area thunder is a rare event. Happy to be indoors today.

One more day in Rouvyland it is.

And Rhodie days in Florence, OR. Good lord, all the bikers would roll in, drinkin' in the streets was A-OK but inside the bars where the one-percenters were chillin', all the ladies would be hitting the dancefloor topless.

Speaking of sparks, I kinda wanna play some of the band Sparks, but gonna fire up some Stevie Windwood instead...

Mid ride break. About 57* and cloudy. Raced a 30 something up a 2.5 mile climb. I guess he weighed 120 lbs. He smoked me at the 1/2 way point but burned too many matches and slowly closed him down at the top. Average grade was 7%. But it was a hollow victory since he was 60 miles in and I was 15. HE hit 186 which is pushing it. Top end is 191. At the top the climb we went our own directions fortunately because there was no way I could keep up 300 watts.

i have heard maybe 2 rumbles this whole weekend. I feel cheated. OTOH, we've gotten close to 2" of good, soaking rain, so I won't complain. Well, maybe a little, because no outdoor ride today. OTOH, I had a good time Zwiftng. I did a route - "Dust In The Wind".- with 4 smallish climbs. I decided to just ride like I was outside - stomp up the little rises, settle in and grind out the hills at 75-80 rpm, spin down the other side - Zwift's algorith reduces negative gradients to 50%, so what's nominally -6% is really -3, so coasting down hills isn't really like IRL. I didn't do it as a hammerfest, but I ended up beating my previous time on the route by 6 minutes.

I was rooting for Pogacar because I wanted him to win his last monument but WVA was my next choice.

We took a side trip to Coronado today. It was fine, but kinda like our visit last year to Carmel by the Sea, it felt funny to be around such ostentation. Would NOT want to live there.

We are enjoying San Diego, and tomorrow we hop on a train to head for LA. More cycling content AND baseball to follow.

Yet another spoiler. And from you of all people. My evening pasttime. Guess it’s not necessary anymore. I hear there was drama at the masters.

that’s interesting, I never thought of Coronado (or really any part of San Diego) as ostentatious…. certainly not compared to nouveau riche areas in Florida or Arizona or Texas, or the truly rich neighborhoods of LA or NYC or even SF. what kind of ostentation is going down in Coronado these days?

Watch the women's race, no spoilers here yet. One horrible crash early, though. Another late when a fan knocked Lucinda Brand off her bike. I read people saying it was an accident but it looked like he grabbed her handlebar and the announcers thought so, too. She did get up and rejoin the fray. Pretty good finish on the track.

Saw some supercars. It was not that in-your-face, but you definitely could smell the money.

For there to be drama at a golf tournament, said drama has to be about something OTHER THAN golf.

That's all? Any given Sunday here you'll see at least 2 Ferraris, a Lambo or so, maybe a MacLaren. You get used to it.

Since the word is now out ... agree. I am a Pogačar fan, and was hoping he could complete the set, but if not him I am very happy for WVA. He's had a rough go these past couple of years, so nice to see a big (and deserved) win.
