Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: '08 Specialized Roubaix Pro, '06 Trek Fuelx 6

Here she is...

I have added a few things:
- Mike Garcia Niobium 30 wheels
- Selle San Marco Aspide Arrowhead Ti Saddle
- Ultegra pedals
- Ultegra 11-23 cassette

I know someone is going to give me the obligatory "flip it" comment. I just had the bike fitted today; the stem stays at +16 deg. Note the amount of exposed seat post. Even with the extreme rise on the stem I still have 8cm of saddle-bar drop. I'd get a larger frame but Specialized doesn't make one.

You didn't like the Specialized Alias saddle?

Yeah, it's an '06 Expert. I came with a 155mm Avatar which was way too wide for more. Yes, I am tall but my sit bones are close together. The Avatar is also boat anchor heavy.

I did try the Alias 130 on my other roadie, but found the San Marco just a little more comfortable. I also tried a Toupe 130 and it really didn't like it. It sagged too much in the middle, so much that my butt would naturally side to the middle of the saddle all of the time.

Santiago Cycling. I think that is where you had some problems getting the compact crank installed on your Roubaix, right? When I was there today Robert seemed like a pretty good guy. He's quite knowledgeable but not intimidating or pretentious. I can definitely feel an improvement already, pedaling just feels more efficient.

Yeah I'll probably go there to get fitted in the next month or so. How long did it take and did you have to buy anything to make the fit complete? I hate to be nosy, but how much did it run? You could PM me if you like, I'd just like to know what to expect going in.

It took about 1:45 and it ran $140. I thought it was rather pricey but it's a lot cheaper than knee surgery. Pain in my left knee is what finally motivated me to get fitted. I have been adjusting the saddle height, cleats, etc. but I just couldn't get a good fit. I figured it was time to see a pro.

I can't wait to see if you're still pleased with the results in a couple of months and have not changed anything. I tend to just get used to the position I'm in rather than move stuff around much, probably not the best method at my age.

I sure I'll move things around some more, but at least I have a good starting point.

Sounds like a fitting would probably be a good idea for you. You don't want to find out the hard way that the position you're in is destorying your knees.

I just test rode the Roubaix comp 06 - it was red, not blue like the one in the pic. Is that because I'm in Canada? Do they have different colours for different countries? I am set on a Roubaix, think I will go with the expert though. Can't wait!

No, you rode the expert with a tripple crank because it comes in red/black. later.

Last time I checked the letters "COMP" spelled comp - that was what was on the RED bike. Any other thoughts?

Bikechic would be correct...image is straight from Specialized Canada website. It is the 2006 Roubaix Comp Double or Triple

Not mine but just like it. I must say that after 150 I really enjot this bike. The difference between this and my Allez Sport is night and day.

besides color, is there any difference between the expert and comp frames? the website says the expert is frame is a 7r or something, but it seems like total BS to me.

on the expert, where the seat tube bottle cage goes, my FD band is in between the two bolts, making my cage high centered on it. seems odd to me.

nice pics!

The Pro and Expert frames are a little lighter. My seat tube cage is like that too...no big deal, I have had other bikes like that.

I'm thinking of buying a roubaix frame and installing some triple dura ace to it 7803's. Can I use a triple mixed with dura aces 10 speed cassette?

Sure why not. You will want a long cage RD but there is no difference in the cassettes.

Some snapshots of my new bike. I've had it for about a month now, but it's pretty new to me. Way more bike than I'm good for, but it motivates me to get off my bum and go riding everytime I glance at it.
