Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Actually, because of "rounding" some of the answers above are wrong.
Here's the formula:

Miles...divided by minutes...times 60...equals average speed (in miles per hour)

Applied to the OP's data:

14 divided by 46 = 0.30434

0.30434 times 60 = 18.26 mph average speed

Bob

P.S. It is useful to know this formula even if you DO have a cycling computer because it can help you figure your ETA or how fast you have to go to make it to a destination by a certain time. (e.g. I have 20 minutes left to go 8 miles to get to the start of the Club Ride on time....8 divided by 20 = .4 times 60 = 24. Thus, you have to average 24 mph to get to the Club Ride on time.)
Since you are claiming others are wrong...
14 divided by 46 = 0.30435

0.30435 times 60 = 18.26 mph average speed

But why not be consistent and keep it to 4 significant figures like you have in the final answer?
14 divided by 46 = 0.3043

0.3043 times 60 = 18.26 mph average speed

he said nothing about mph, just be nice and give him the speed in miles/minute

also

oh my god, have you people never had a bad brain day when it just does not work, for example you go to spell a word that you use every day, such as "word" and for the life of you it just looks wrong and you end up misspelling it anyway. wow go internet goons

(60 minutes) divided by (ride time in minutes) times (distance covered, in km or miles)

= km/h or mph, depending on which you used for distance covered.

Makes sense, huh?

if that is the case, i have much better ideas, in the welcome new forum people section, we should have them post their credit card numbers for a period of 24 hrs. can you imagine all the great stuff we could get with that info.

I think of it in terms of ratios. 14/46 = X/60. How do you figure what X is? Doing that little cross-multiplication thingie from school, you get: 46X = 14 x 60, or 46X = 840. Divide both sides of the equation by 46, and you arrive at your answer. X = 18.26 mph. I'm a lawyer and I still remember this stuff!!

Now let's worry about important stats -- earned run average, on-base percentage, etc.

First, convert your minutes and seconds to decimal hours. Formula for this is Dec_Hours = ((minutes*60) + seconds) / 3600. Add in any whole hours and divide into your miles ridden.

Complete formula is:

Average_speed = Mileage / (Whole_hours + (((Minutes*60)+Seconds)/3600))

Where are we Bobby? Road Cycling - nuff said.

I was thinking about posting a new thread with some lame troll question just to show how brutal it can really get! (and I am not saying the OP was a lame troll question...it was just funny, especially when he stated he was a math major!)

Edit: Ok I went and dooded it. https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/311815-what-cadence.html
Despite that fact that I am fairly well known around here, I bet it still generates some 'nice' replies.

Geeze, if one more person gets on here and posts the formula for figuring average speed!!!!

I mean, do you check into a 3-page post that asks that question in it's title, go straight to the end without reading anything but the OP, and assume that nobody has answered it yet?

Oh, yeah, this is Road Cycles. I guess it is possible...

Matt

P.S. When reading yet another Pg.3 post telling how to calculate avg. speed, I get the mental image of a 3rd grader sitting in his desk with his hand raised because the teacher finally asked a question he can answer, about to come out of his pants if somebody doesn't call on him soon...

Not very often...but, when I do, I have the good sense to submit a quick query to Mamma Google.

The OP could have found his answer in 2 seconds, and not looked like a dufus, if he'd just done a quick search like this:

The OP gave us two significant figure time, two s.f. distance, so you can only have two significant figures in your final answer. So it's 18. Let's keep up here.

Your right there, and I thought of that but went with his own inconsistency and didn't address the already stated accuracy given by the OP.

Oh, and welcome aboard...

A year ago I came on asking about whether my tire would explode because it had little cracks all over it. I got shelled for it (I ought to look up the thread...) Now I've been corrupted and I'm on here giving you grief. Well, actually, I was giving Chipcom grief, but you get my drift.

I don't know I have ridiculed people for both before so the combination isn't really that much of a reach.
