Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I will keep this in mind over the next 100K miles of road cycling RW, and try to figure out how I ever survived the last 20 years on a road bike here in the NY Metro Area without your input. I am confident that my TT bike fitting process was successful since the local TT gurus who have seen my on my rig since think it looks good. More importantly it feels right. Unlike a 'bike fitting' session with one LBS that may or may not know what they're doing, I got lots of input (including some from my own LBS). It all seemed to concur. But the initial valuable advice that got me moving towards the right position was right here on BF from guys like UT Dude and Dr. W.

Here is a post from Road Bike Reviews:

>>I recently switched from SPD pedals and cleats to Speedplay X3's. I never had hotspots with the SPDs, they were comfortable for hours. I switched to X3's and now my right foot has 2 hot-spots (outside edge I think) after only 20 minutes or so. I used the correct sidi shims under the adapter plates, and torqued the bolts correctly. <<

I have also spoken to a couple of local riders who did have their hot spot issues disappear after similar pedal changes. What really illustrates ignorance when it comes to bike fit is the silly notion that you can always predict how any of us will respond physically to position/component changes. It's similar to baseball: you have to play the games.

As I mentioned I'm keeping the Speedplays for now. First ride on the Keos today.

Pcad,

I think he meant hopefully you'll spend enough at your LBS to get a gift basket from them...

yeah....lance rode basically the same heavy crappy pedals too....

Glad you are so LEET that 120 grams really means that much.

Have fun when your KEO cleats break in the front for no apparent reason.

I've had problems with debilitating hotspots since I started riding this past spring, except mine start to bother me at random times such as 40 miles into a very hard ride or 85 miles into a century. I had been on Bebop pedals (essentially Speedplays) and a bike shop fitter told me he was 95% certain my pedals were causing the problem, so I went searching for a wider platform pedal.

After reading a bunch of reports of Keos snapping at the axle I decided not to go with Look. I haven't crashed yet and I would hate to do so as a result of equipment failure.

The Ultegra 6620s I picked up are pretty damn nice. They have a wider platform and the cleats are nice since they have rubber tips which make walking easy. I have got used to the free float of my Bebops so I was afraid there wouldn't be enough float, but after setting them up correctly, 6 degrees happens to be just enough and doesn't allow my ankles to float too far.

First 30 miles on the Keos: I like them. More solid platform, but most importantly I didn't notice them, which is the most important part. The bigger test is Saturday, a 110 mile ride with lots of vertical. I have yet to do that ride without hot spots on the Speedplays. We'll see how it works on the Keos. I hope the axles don't snap.

What the hell is 'LEET'? That sounds like a sinister political movement.

120 grams is a quarter pound son. Weight weenies have killed for less. Bury me in a CF casket. It better be light, all my pall bearers will be skinny cyclists.

Although you are correct we've been through this. It doesn't matter how comfortable, wide and nice a pedal is, pcad can't afford those precious 120 grams. Pcad needs to suck up the pain that will cost him hundreds of watts to save 120 grams.

And considering pcad said he is "Currently 921st out of 1593 45+ Vets in the national individual TT rankings for 45+ riders on the USA Cycling website", 120 grams shouldn't be his number one priority. What ever happened to its all about the engine?

It's only partly about the engine. It is also about:

• The bike schwag

• The OCPosity

• The Road Nazi vs. Fred Wars

• The BF three ring circus

• The self-loathing

• The endorphin rush

It goes on and on. Need I continue? If you have to be told all of this, you may be in the wrong place. Shut the F up and ride. Because nobody here will. They may ride, but they'll never shut up.

God, nothing gets me lathered up like a BF Bike Weenie tongue lashing.

That's impressive hyperbole. So I can become Landis-stage-whatever-caliber by switching out my Frogs? What pedals should I use?

Good choice on the keo. Those who have complained about cleat wear on the keo's will be happy to note that for 2008 cleats come with rubber pads for walking.

Though I personally have never experienced walking issues as I tend to ride on them.

Enjoy the keo's amazing pedals.

I stood in line at the post office for 20 minutes this morning. Marble floor. Keo cleats. No covers. Didn't fall down, not even once. This didn't stop all the other patrons from looking at me funny while I click-clacked around, but it could have been worse.

Keos rock. Nothing wrong with the cleats. If I can't break them, you won't break them pcad.

I went from Keos to 6620s. Not looking back. Weight Weenies sometimes just need to shut up and ride. LA rode SPD-L, From memory, Dura Ace is 1/2lb HEAVIER than Record but has won 8 of 9 TDF and so has SPD-L.

and yes...I know how much 120 grams is and it is .26lbs for the weight weenie crowd NOT .25.

Sometimes heavier is better when the performance is better especially after having a brand new keo cleat break off in the front during a climb that was 18% and having a foot fly off the pedal on an up stroke. This was the 2nd ride of a new cleat.

I don't doubt your drive or enjoyment of cycling but I do doubt that .26lb will really matter for a rider of your caliber.

BTW, I seriously doubt you are old enough to call me son.

It's not about the rider, it's about the quality of EPO.

The only problem I've had "walking" in my keo cleats was the first time I stepped into a porta-potty. I nearly lost it on the slick plastic floor.

nice try but its no hyperbole and even if it was hyperbole's are not meant to be taken literally.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperbole

Its no exaggeration that when you have "rather torturous ... painful hot spots" on your feet that you will lose power. You think you can still put down the same amount of power with torturous hot spots as you can with comfortable feet? I sure couldn't. And your logic makes no sense. I have never seen it mentioned in this entire thread that comfortable pedals make you a stage winner at the tour de france. Not sure where you pulled that one out of but nice try.

But you're from LI. There are no hills on LI.

By the way, when i get into the 80-110 mile zone where these hot spots become an issue, I'm not racing. I'm trying to get home from a long training ride to watch the Mets bullpen blow another lead. Who's riding the Tour de France? I'm riding in the Tour de Fred.

I didn't mention me riding on hills but you are correct. There are zero hills on LI. I am just suggesting to try a pedal that seems like it would fit the bill for you. To dismiss it for the petty fact that it is 120 grams to "heavy" seems silly. But its your money, your bike, and your pain.
