Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BikesDirect

So I'm thinking of getting a bike off bikesdirect. I'm looking at $800 max. My main question was if any one brand was better than another. Motobecane, mercier, windsor, dawes, ect. If you have any specific suggestions that would be great too. Thanks

I appreciate all those links about bikesdirect, but I have already done my research on them. I was really interested in how the brands compared.

Ask your local bike shop what they think. Preferably on a Saturday.

If you have any specific suggestions that would be great too.
Stop shopping at Walmart also.

I'm in my 2nd season on a Windsor, and other than being heavy, it has performed just fine. My friend has a Motobecane, also heavy (of course his is a 64cm frame), performed just fine.....blah, blah, blah. Other than that, it's BD, you're on your own. I'm highly likely to buy my next bike at a LBS, not because of anything BD has done wrong, BD doesn't sell Lapierre.

If you need a 60 or 62 cm, I would save another 100 bucks and get this bike

Your extensive research revealed that there was a difference between the bd brands? I always thought it was just stickers.

Forgive some of the idiot road weenies here. Any mention of Bikesdirect provokes a Pavlovian outpouring of moronic comments. I figure this one's good for six pages.

But in answer to your question - no, I don't believe any of the bikesdirect brands are better or higher end than the others. The quality and price are determined by the frame material and the components on it, not by brand. Titanium, carbon and steel bikes will be more expensive than the aluminum ones.

But you can pick between a Motobecane Grand Record. Dawes Lightning 2300 or Mercier Corvus based on the components you prefer. One brand doesn't indicate higher quality than another.

I hear they actually grease the BB's on the dawes. j/k

Ignore the brands entirely, they seriously do not represent the bike.

Shop by components, frame material, and reviews.

Keep in mind you get no personalized service, no tune-ups, make no friends with the shop, no deals on accessories, no place to loiter around in, etc.
I am a believer in LBS for complete bikes.
On the other hand, I've seen some full carbon bikes at BD for a good price. But, refer back to first sentence.
Good luck.

Regrettably, Pcad must recuse himself from commenting on this thread to avoid even the slightest appearance of BD Shillery.

My co worker wanted a road bike he was on a strict budget and bought a bike from BD. He went for one of the low end models not something I would of went for but it's all he could afford. It came in 5 days after online purchase. I went over to help him tune it up he did the pre assembly which was very easy. What I ended up doing was removing both wheels truing and tensioning spokes adjusted bearings it was needed, loosen both cables and retention and adjust both derailleurs including moving the FD completly, same with brake cables and pads did a quick fit or him and all was good. Went for a 25mi ride the next day with a multi purpose tool and did some minor adjustments on the road and it seems to be ok now.
Be prepared to adjust everything if you want it good! its not going to be a take it out of crate slap it together and ride bike.

My sincerest apologies. It took me a while to find those BD threads. There are so few from which to choose.

Ditto above...

I own a BD Motobecane and love it, I've been riding road bikes longer than many here have been alive.

1) Go to www.roadbikereview.com for reviews on any bike(s) you are interested in: Motobecane, Dawes, Windsor, whatever. Listen to people who own or have experience with a bike/brand.

2) How BD labels bikes to brands is anyones guess. IMO it doesn't matter one bit.

3) As to specific models, I think BD does a good job of keeping solid value between models.

4) Size/fit is #1 priority...MUCHO importante!

good luck,

True, but that doesn't answer his question. Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac are made by GM but the different brands address different market segments. I'd be interested in knowing the owner's thoughts on why they have multiple brands when it doesn't seem obvious that Motobecane is targeting a very different type of rider than Mercier, for example.

If the question were asked in the MTB or Cyclocross forum Mike might pitch in with an answer, but I believe he's avoiding the road forum for now.

Rode the Fly Ti MTB again this AM. Fantastic bicycle regardless of price. Factor in what I paid and it may be the most astonishing bike I've ever owned.

I'm all for helping people too, but with 6000 BikesDirect threads in the last year, I doubt there's anything that hastn't been said, but some people take it as a challenge to think up something new.
