it took me maybe half a dozen tries to finally quit smoking for good... they would always tempt me after i quit, until i finally made it stick, now i have absolutely no desire to smoke, i think it's the multiple efforts and failures that made it possible to get rid of the desire.

I'm going to be pissed when they come out with a cure for lung cancer though, thinking of all those cigarettes I could have smoked in the meantime!

I was able to quite for about 2 weeks each time. But started up again with "hey bro can i bum a cig?" to people at work. The nicotine aids (i used the lozenges) helped me not need to smoke, but physically i still craved that "bite" of a cig and would want one every 4 hours.
Probably the only solution is to just HTFU

You're right about that.

It was more than covered by the what I was spending on smokes. As I said in my earlier post, I still miss it sometimes.

Smoked for 20 years. Tried to quit cold turkey and almost decided to drive my truck into a freeway abutment. Got some Skoal and put in a pinch for a couple months, then it was a lot easier to stop that.
That was in 1987, now I am allergic to tobacco smoke and it gives me headaches, makes my eyes and nose swell shut, and causes fluid in my lungs.

What worked for me was quit cold turkey. No nicotine substitutes. Plain chewing gum. I tried nicotine substitutes before but I caved. My wife bought this for me on the one year anniversary.

$5 a pack? Where do you live? It's more like $10 a pack here, thanks to 'Mike the Mayor.'

1. If you are going to smoke, the least you could do is understand that you are throwing money at your government for things like kindergarten, public transportation, science, etc. If you smoke you are a patriot! A slowly withering, flag toting PATRIOT, sir! Now keep puffing while my kid learns about colors and how not to end up like you.
2.Smoke rollies. Youll pay less tax, get more flavor and nicotine buzz, and youll look like a badass all the time forever. Bali Shag, anything by Peter Stokkebye, etc. is good.
3. I quit smoking before I turned 18, because I knew if I didnt quit before I could walk into a store and buy smokes like anything else, I WOULD NEVER QUIT.
