Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How is a woman getting a catcall any more hurtfull that a guy getting crap for having small legs. (not me, I've never posted a picture, I couldn't stand the rejection)
Unwelcome sexual advances <> guys insulting each other.

you've obviously never had a friend, or SO, who's been the subject of catcalls, day in and day out.

No I have not. Nor have I ever seen the posts that people are referring to as sexual harassment on here. I've only seen playful ignorance at worst.

And by the way, I can't find an online dictionary that says catcalls are sexual harassment. I get how it's being used here, but I've not seen it done here.

Oh wait, yes I have had a SO, my girlfriend before my wife. She liked the attention though. Probably why I left her for my wife 25 years ago...

Whenever I post a picture of myself here I get made fun of because of my grey beard and pot belly and people accuse me of being a bent rider which is worse than being called a Republican.

I get weepy and depressed about it for days afterwards.

But up to this point I've never complained because I've been afraid people would just make even more fun of me.

It's not really fair, you know.

There are lots of women interested in road cycling out there. But as has been said time again, we just get fed up with the "are you hot" comments each time we open our mouths.

There are some really good supportive comments in this thread though, specially from Dr Pete. Thank you Dr Pete. Maybe we'll venture back here from time to time.

And, the fact is that if a woman whistled at you, if you are like 99% of the males in this world, you might find it as a sign of approval.

Please, anyone that finds the above sentence offensive, note the "if", "if", not 100%, "might"

Wrong.

You are correct.

I would be flattered.

It would make my day.

Heck... I'm introverted and getting divorced. I'm happy when a woman notices that I exist.

If you don't believe in human nature, doesn't that leave us with animal instincts?

The main thing that separates us from other animals sexually is that we are able and choose to suppress our sexual urges.

To expect everyone to do so in exactly the same way is extremely unrealistic.

Just the opposite, I don't question the human part but the "nature" part. I don't believe there's something inherent to being human, except for our great ability to adapt - that is, not having an unchangeable "nature".

Don't you think that might have something to do with it?

And it works both ways by the way. More often than I see women treated poorly on here, I see men jump to help them because they ARE a woman. And I have seen women flirt like hell on here. And just like it might be a small percent of the women that do that, so is it a small percent of the men that scare women away.

Like every other thread in RC? Regardless whether a man or woman started it.

I think women should just get in here and post ... and I also think that the mods should be right on it if it turns negative toward the women.

Maybe they venture in here, but they see everyone talking away using words they don't understand or in ways they don't understand. And they see all the teasing that goes on. And so ... they don't come back here to ask questions.
Gotta disagree. You're assuming some male pushed females to get into cycling and they may not be the case. I think many of your posts show more generalizing than others on here.

We're becoming prudes in the age of political correctness. Sure sex sells. And sex should be fun. If I had a killer body I'd want to show it off too. It's funny because when I was living in the UK the comedies on TV (ie Coupling) are so much more sexual than they could ever be here in America. The level of provocatism there is far beyond ours as well. People need to embrace sex and stop fearing it.

Quick question - can someone link me to all the women hating threads? I've been here a long time and can count maybe on one hand the number of times I have ever seen a thread posted by a woman go downhill - and each time it was addressed by mods. I think in general, everyone is harassed on the RC forum. Dosen't matter which protected category you belong to, we're all treated the same.

Lastly, it's the internet people and this is a free forum. Hell, we don't even know if the men in this thread are really men and vice versa. This is one of the most respectable forums I've been a part of. I spent several years in the BMW car mod world and let me tell you they make this forum look like something straight from the good side of heaven.

I'm reading "The Closing of the American Mind" by Harold Bloom and he writes about people like you but in my sheltered life I didn't realize that you really exist out there. But it doesn't have much to do with sexual harrassment and hostile environments. It's more like meeting the president of the Solipsists' Society and being able to keep a straight face.

Anyway don't let us disturb you.
