Being an individual I can only be personally responsible for my own biking behavior, and always defer to cyclists.

Hmmm, doesn't seem that way. Visit a motorcycle board. Listen to them b!tch about the cyclist going <20mph up a 55mph canyon road, inside the lane and around a blind corner. They want you off the road.

Of course, listening to the other side would force you to challenge your own bias ...

Don't forget riding two wide while talking to each other or swerving side-to-side while doing little climbs. Oh, and rolling through stop signs and red lights!

There are irresponsible cyclists (moto & pedal) all over. You can't point to the actions of a few and judge an entire group.
I sure don't like it when I see one of ours blitzing red lights or taking-a-lane of a 50+ mph two-lane road (willfully inconveniencing and sometimes endangering anyone stuck behind them), just as much as I mislike seeing your (lame) video.
What were these motorcyclists doing wrong, exactly? They were annoyingly loud, and it is indeed against the law to change the exhaust pipe on their motorcycles.
Speeding? How fast were they going?
What was the speed limit on that road? (They white-sign speed limit, not the yellow-sign advisory limit.)

Pedal-partisans may claim it's perfectly legal for them to ride two-abreast or take-a-lane, even as traffic backs up behind them. But this is just as irresponsible & dangerous, and only sows hostility & hatred like the OP seems to have for these 'super bikers'. Did you know that the yellow speed limit signs (they usually say 25 or 35) around many corners are advisory speed limits, and are not binding or citable? Even if the yellow sign says 25, if it's a public highway, the actual speed limit is 55, or whatever the most recent white sign decreed.

There are responsible, reasonable cyclists (pedal & motor) out there too. We have a lot more in common with those people than you might think.

I'm just trying to point out that there are two sides to every coin. Not trolling by any means, just playing the devil's advocate here.


One lane is not necessarily legal. In my state, and in many others I have lived, it is only legal to ride in the lane (as a bicyclist) if there is an obstacle to be avoided. Otherwise, it is law to stay to the furthest right as deemed safe by whichever LEO decides to, or not to cite you with a moving violation. I've been warned by an LEO, while on my bicycle, for illegal passing by passing a line of cars (I was on the shoulder).


Now, to caveat on that, I would argue that the motorcyclists are being safer than many bicyclists. Bicyclists have the inherent flaw of nearly always being an obstruction to motorized traffic flow. The motorcyclists in question seemed to be in control of their vehicles, capable of exceeding traffic flow and having their wits about them and completely motivated to pay attention to the road. Hey, their decision is putting their lives at stake, don't want to lose it because of target fixation.

I would much rather prefer that the OP post videos of every car driver chatting away on the cell phone, eating and 'taking in the sights' while not having trained eyes on the road. Also, cyclists not holding a line, not signaling turns and stops and 'taking in the sights.'

I am both a motorcyclist (Ducati 999) and cyclist. My tolerance for relatively high speeds is...high. 90% of the time the moto's give plenty of room and all is fine. The 10% of the time they don't it is because they are riding far too fast for the conditions and generally their abilities. Take it to the f'ing track - that is why it is there. Anyplace in LA or the Bay Area you are a few hours from multiple racetracks where for $100 you can ride all day as fast as you want/can.

I'm sure it's a lot of fun though! Whether it is dangerous or idiotic is relative to the degree of risk you are willing to take. To many people descending a winding mountain road on a bike at 50mph, with skinny tires is also dangerous and idiodic.

You didn't read the original post. They passed us three times. The second time they came within 2 feet of us while we were riding northbound (they were cornering southbound and were taking up the entire road) Had we not stopped they would have likely hit us or caused us to crash.

That video is only one of three instances where they passed us.

In any event, they knew what they were doing; that's why they had a scout rider ahead of the pack. They all had radios on their shoulders. As for the super bikes; they left noxious fumes in their wake. My friend suspected they were using a special racing fuel.

I'd estimate they were cornering at 60+ mph and on the straights they were above 100+ mph. The road is 45mph white sign. They were passing cars on blind corners over a double yellow.

the amount of destruction one can leave behind is very different between the two.

I for one wouldn't want a 400kg motorbike plowing through my windshield at 160km/h. (assuming I'm going 50km/h and they're going 110km/h)

I raced motorcycles. Tracks are much safer for riders and the risks to others are much much lower. Plus, tracks are more better funner.
